Guest guest
With all the stomach/digestive issues being discussed on our site I thought I would share my latest diagnosis and how this autoimmune disease is not mentioned in any thyroid material I have read in books or on websites yet when looking up my EGD results on line it is shown to be directly tied to Hashimoto’s and thyroid disease or the H. Pylori bacteria. I am negative for H. Pylori but positive for Hashimotos. Here are the links with an excerpt: http://www.merck.com/mmpe/sec02/ch013/ch013d.html “Patients with autoimmune metaplastic atrophic gastritis (AMAG) have antibodies to parietal cells and their components (which include intrinsic factor and the proton pump H+,K+‑ATPase). AMAG is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Some patients also develop Hashimoto's thyroiditis and 50% have thyroid antibodies; conversely, parietal cell antibodies are found in 30% of patients with thyroiditis.†http://autoimmunedisease.suite101.com/article.cfm/autoimmune_atrophic_gastritis “The frequency of atrophic gastritis is not known because chronic gastritis does not usually cause symptoms. Females are at higher risk for autoimmune atrophic gastritis with three times as many women affected as men. Patients with other autoimmune disorders, especially autoimmune thyroid disorders, are more likely to develop atrophic gastritis. Atrophic gastritis is the most common autoimmune disease to develop in patients with Graves' disease who have been treated with radioiodine.†One of the big issues is the B12 deficency and the higher risk of stomach cancer as a result of it being autoimmune instead of caused by H. Pylori. Penny

Guest guest
Penny, Thanks for sharing! This is so very interesting. I googled to learn more and came across this good article on hypothyroidism and B12 that mentions the atrophic gastritis: http://www.naturopathydigest.com/archives/2008/oct/schor.php So, this is indeed really important info for everyone as it suggests 50% of hypo patients are low B-12 (and it's either this atrophic gastritis or celiac that can be the root). Now, I gotta wonder if one can have both - i.e., is this something any of us should consider even if we have the CD diagnosis? Or, is replacement B12 the primary treatment and thus it doesn't really matter? Thanks, B.
