Guest guest
Teaching Appropriate Behavior to Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities, including Down Syndrome, Autism, and Asperger Syndrome McGreevy, Ph.D., BCBA Board Certified Behavior Analyst assisted by , BCABA Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst September 6 and 7, 2004 Check-in: 8:00 a.m. Workshop: 8:30 a.m. – 3:30p.m. The Ramada Jarvis Hotel Chester United Kingdom This workshop provides specific, practical teaching and management strategies from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) designed to replace non-compliant, aggressive, self-stimulatory, and self-injurious behavior in children and adults with developmental disabilities, including -- Down syndrome, Autism, Asperger syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Fragile X syndrome, Angelman syndrome, and children and adults who are blind and/or deaf, or who have multiple handicaps – with academic, daily living, leisure, and communication skills. These strategies can be implemented in schools, homes, and other community settings. This workshop is designed for teachers, parents, in-home therapists, speech-language pathologists, psychologists, and school supervisors. Dr. McGreevy will describe and demonstrate teaching procedures that have been validated in the scientific literature, rather than those that " sound good, look good, or feel good " . These procedures include: (1) building a behavioral relationship with the learner by using noncontingent reinforcement, errorless teaching, and fast- paced instruction; (2) teaching expressive communication and language directly using principles and procedures from ABA-Verbal Behavior; (3) using functional assessments, the matching law, effective concurrent schedules of reinforcement, and consistent consequences for appropriate behavior and inappropriate behavior, and (4) eliminating behavioral " eggshells " using stimulus-fading, differential reinforcement, and systematic desensitization. The registration fee includes guided notes and teaching protocols written by Dr. McGreevy, along with morning and afternoon refreshments and lunch. Seating is limited; early registration is strongly encouraged. After using the procedures described by Dr. McGreevy, delegates to this workshop may request a private, clinical consultation during his visit to the UK in December. The Ramada Jarvis Hotel is only a few miles from the Chester railway station (£ 5.00 taxi fare) and about 40 miles from the Manchester airport (there are rail links to Chester). The hotel is offering a special rate for workshop delegates -- £ 52.50 per night for bed and breakfast.
