Thanks so much for suggesting the additional

blood work. I got my results today. Vit D was low and Vit B-12 high.

Ferritin 64 (10-220) (not

ideal, I guess, but not too bad)

Folic Acid > 24 (>5)

*Vit B-12 1398 (250-1100)

*Vit D 28.9 (30-60)

Calcium 9.6 (8.5 – 10.5)

The rest of my Complete Metabolic Panel was

normal, too.

At this point my doctor advised me to

supplement with 800 ius daily. That seems less than most people are taking,

but maybe cause I’m only a little low? I know it needs to be D3, but

when should I expect to see a change? The nurse who called me with the

instructions wasn’t sure. She said check again in maybe 2 months.

Anyone else have any info I should read or need to know?

Hi ,

Okay, my AST/ALT ratio is greater than 1, but not much.

AST 17 (5-35)

ALT 13 (7-56)

Ratio 1.2

Bilirubin, Total 0.6 (.1-1.3)

I will take your advice and call for cancellations at Dr. Christensen's

office. I may also go ahead and make an appointment with Dr. Owens. I

don't know how far out she schedules. No one has yet checked my adrenals

and I am still increasing my synthroid per my other doc. I would like to

have one doctor I can trust to look at everything.

Thanks again for your help and insight.

Grace

Hi Grace,

Thanks for the response. Yes, you can look at the ratio of your

AST/ALT to determine how well your liver is functioning as well. If

it's greater than 1, it can be considered problematic, although

since both are in range, it's certainly not critical. Also,

bilirubin is another one. My poor liver also struggles (it is a

symptom of a potential celiac/ gluten issue ;). And liver issues are

also correlated with hypothyroidism (no surprise, huh).

So, your liver problems may explain the excess B12/folate. Here's a

good overview on these two tests:

Dr. Christensen is really good at looking at this stuff. You might

call about once a week (on a Monday morning) and check on

cancellations for the week. I was able to get in very quickly that

way - although it was slightly a pain to get a 9am appt (those are

usually the cancellations ;).

As long is this doc is working with you on getting your thyroid

dosage right (and checking adrenals?), you should be headed the

right direction. It does take a while to sort through all of this. I

figured out alot of this stuff when I had a bad doctor and I was

suspecting the celiac and just knew there'd be hints in the regular

blood tests (the liver thing for example).

B.
