" A Model for Hope " Program for Children and Young People with

Autistic Spectrum

Disorders

Greetings from the founder of CASD edited by , M.D.

(UTHSC at San )

Autism incidence is growing rapidly around the State, country

and world. Awareness is increasing but remains a step or two behind–

more and more frequently another story appears in the newspaper,

magazines or news show; a panel is convened; a movie or TV show

features a character who is autistic. Understanding of the issues

surrounding autism is also increasing, trying to catch up, but as

yet remain further behind—but there is HOPE! A lot of talented

people are devoting their lives to unraveling those mysteries—many

of them we are fortunate to have at CASD Long Beach Conference.

New medical treatments tailored to children's needs are

essential. At the same time, we must not forget about prevention.

Future generations need to be protected. Key questions have been

raised concerning the safety of vaccines, pesticides, indoor air

pollutants and other environmental exposures. We need to get to the

bottom of the problem: Why has there been a recent, rapid rise in

the prevalence of autism? Our genetic make-up changes very slowly,

over many generations. Diagnosis may be improved, but not enough to

account for the exponential increases in some areas. That leaves

the environment-- what we eat, breathe, drink, and medical

treatments, such as vaccines. Each of these factors needs to be

understood and addressed. As a nation, we are in a crisis. As

parents of children with autism, we realize this and know firsthand

what most parents do not know-- until one of their children develops

a severe neurobehavioral problem.

Sometimes autism appears to begin after a toxic exposure, and

these children seem to develop intolerances to commonly encountered

exposures-- chemicals, foods, medications, caffeine, etc. These

everyday exposures thereafter appear to trigger to symptoms and

perpetuate the condition. This two-stage mechanism,

called " toxicant-induced loss of tolerance " may represent a new

medical paradigm, one that most doctors and toxicologists did not

learn in school, but need to understand. We can teach them about

this process and help them understand which exposures seem to make

our children's symptoms worse. Research into this mechanism, which

may underlie autism, ADHD, depression and other neurocognitive

problems, is urgently needed.

By understanding the approaches and benefits of different

disciplines and techniques, parents and caregivers can be better

informed in designing a specific intervention program for their

child. Combining Biomedical, Behavioral, Metabolic (Vitamin), PT,

ST, Hippo, and other therapies, with the special circumstances,

strengths and challenges of the child in mind, the resulting

integrated program will more likely fit the child, rather than

expecting the child to fit a particular program. By creating or

updating a program that better fits child, we provide the child a

program with a higher potential for significant improvement.

We have been blessed with giving care to some very special

people. These children need our best efforts. We need to keep the

momentum up and keep challenging each other to further the

understanding of the underlying issues. Together, we can work

MIRACLES. CASD appreciate so much for all of CASD speakers and

sponsors. Go to www.casdweb.org to get registered today! Long Beach

Airport has a direct flight from most of major cities and is also
