Guest guest
ABA is about letting the data decide. Its not about everybody... all the time. Any program that has the same procedures for everybody, all the time is a " cookie cutter " approach that will work for some children and not others. There is a need to evaluate all of the psychological and educational research (AKA... ABA research) that is out there to help guide our approach. We know from that research that mixing and varying trials will help promote generalization of skills. (See articles from Dr. Heward for examples.) We also know that fluency is a factor in generalization. (See articles from Dr. Kubina for examples.) So we should use these in our teaching and modify the procedures when necessary. Do I recommend " mass trials " ? Sometimes. Do recommend it often? No. But I let the data decide when and how. Do recommend 10 trials of each target be done in a session? Sometimes. But sometimes a child needs 20 -30 and sometimes they only need 2-5. I can best meet the needs of my students by individualizing a program that works for them. That is what we are trying to accomplish in the first place. Right? Thank you for opening this up for discussion. I believe it important for these debates to occur to keep all sides " honest " ) Best, e Quinby <http://www.autismbehaviorconsult.com/> Everyone Can <http://www.autismbehaviorconsut.com/> Learn e Quinby, M.Ed. Guest guest
besides...if you don't randomize trials than how do you expect a child to generalize the knowledge they have learned in a structured setting. I agree with what e Quinby wrote and i also believe it is important to discuss these opinions.
