DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this training is to describe and demonstrate methods of effective teaching for children with autism as found in the literature of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Using the analysis of language as behavior that is under the influence of the principles of operant conditioning provides a viable model for helping individuals with a language deficit. The presentation will conclude with a panel discussion that outlines goals/considerations for effective collaboration between wrap-around providers and educators in the provision of behaviorally based interventions. LEARNER OUTCOMES: Participants will be able to: -Describe the conceptual framework of teaching through verbal behavior by applying the ABA principles. -Illustrate how the principles of ABA can be woven together to manage behaviors and teach language. -Apply fundamental ABA principles to effective instruction. -Generate a list of collaborative goals for educators and wrap-around providers that lead to effective service delivery for students with autism and their families. TARGET AUDIENCE: Individuals working with students with autism who are interested in effective behaviorally based interventions, to include parents, instructional aides (assistants), wrap-around agency staff, teachers, speech-language, therapists, and consultants. AGENDA: 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Registration 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Pairing with reinforcement and classroom management 10:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Break 10:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Natural Environment Training (NET) and Intensive teaching 12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. Effective collaboration between wrap-around providers and educators - panel discussion PRESENTERS: Presenter: M. Caffrey, M.Ed., developed and maintains the Verbal Behavior Network (http://www.verbalbehaviornetwork.com), and Parents of Children with Autism (http://www.poac.net). These collaborative web-based solutions were designed to assist professionals and parents that work with children with autism. Currently, he provides consulting services and presents workshops to treatment teams who serve children with autism with special emphasis on development/implementation of strategies to promote verbal vocal language development in classroom settings. Mr. Caffrey was awarded the Project of Distinction for his work on training paraprofessionals to work with children with autism. In addition, he completed graduate coursework in behavior analysis from Penn State University and is completing the requirements leading to certification as a behavior analyst. CONTINUING EDUCATION: Act 48 clock hours - Three (3) Act 48 clock hours will be awarded to participants who hold a valid PA Professional Educator Certificate.
