Guest guest
CHILDREN WITH AUTISM WHO HAVE APRAXIA OF SPEECH Oct 15, 2004 Merrillville, Indiana, at the Radisson Hotel (http://www.radisson.com/merrillvillein) Tamara S. Kasper, MS, CCC/SLP and Kaufman, M.A., CCC/SLP (http://www.kidspeech.com/) Cost $169.00 / Group Price $149.00 (There are a limited number of discounted registrations available for parentscontact NSS-NRS for information at info@... or by phone at 989-732-3866) (SLPsCEUs are available. Contact Hours = 7) This program examines the process by which children with autism and apraxia of speech become motivated to express their wants and needs verbally. Children who may have an adequate repertoire of consonants and vowels in isolation may not be able to coordinate the motor movements necessary to produce and combine these units to form syllables, words, phrases, and sentences. These children may not be able to speak or may be unintelligible speakers. They may even have difficulty executing the oral movements necessary to produce isolated phonemes. Add to this scenario the diagnosis of autism and the behaviors associated with this diagnosis (avoidance, aggression, and/or self-stimulation) and the management of these children can become difficult and challenging. This clinical program will focus on the evaluation and treatment of children with developmental apraxia of speech who may also have a diagnosis of autism. The information presented will stress techniques and procedures to maintain cooperation while assisting children to become verbal communicators. Kaufman's hierarchy of shaping word approximations toward functional vocabulary and language will also be presented. Online registration is available through Northern Speech Services, Inc.-National Rehabilitation Services: http://www.nss-nrs.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/NSS.woa/wa/Seminars/detail? id=1000330 (If you have trouble using this link, go to www.nss-nrs.com, choose CE Seminars from the drop- downs near the top of the page, then choose By Date or By State).
