Hands on stuff- You have to apply so there in no guarantee- SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATORS Classroom Instruction & Hands-on Training with Learners July 12-16, 2004 & July 19-23, 2004 (10days) Description: Educators in public and private schools who are interested in learning the most effective methods of teaching children with autism and related disabilities are invited to apply for summer institute opportunities. The institute is two weeks in duration. A small group (9 individuals) will be chosen to parti cipate in these training activities. During the institute a full schedule of activities will include didactic instruction and the opportunity to be coached during the delivery of instruction with children with autism. Issues of classroom management and organization necessary to establish a classroom based upon ABA principles will be discussed. There will be nightly homework assignments. Prerequisites: Attendance at Dr. Carbone's Introduction to Verbal Behavior Workshop Readings:Teaching Language to Children with Autism & Other Developmental Disabilities " (Sundberg & Partington) " Assessment of Basic Language and Learner Skills " (Sundberg & Partington) " Behavior Modification: Principles and Procedures " ( Miltenberger) Participant Activities: Classroom Lecture covering 12 ABA modules Complete written, oral & hands-on competencies covering12 ABA modules Hands-on work supervised by Carbone Clinic Employees Functional Assessment of Problem Behaviors Development of Behavior Reduction Plans Assessment of a child using ABLLS Develop & write an Individualized Treatment Plan Meet and discuss treatment plan with child's family Outcomes for Volunteer Students (children): 2.5 hours of therapy for 10 days ABLLS assessment Opportunity for parents to meet with team to discuss treatment plan Behavior Plan (if needed) Individual goals identified Identify most effective teaching strategies Daily Schedule: 8:30am to 11:45am-----Lecture 12:00 to 1:00pm ---------Lunch on your own 1:15pm to 3:45pm-------Hands-on work with children 3:45pm to 4:30pm-------Debriefing and small group work Format: The two week institute will be supervised by Dr. Carbone. Three of his associates will assist with and coordinate the daily activities of the participants. In addition, six other assistant instructors chosen by Dr. Carbone will be available to provide feedback on an individual basis. Our goal is to provide intensive training to the participants with a variety of learners at differing skill levels. All applications will be reviewed by June 1, 2004. The nine chosen participants will be notified by June 4, 2004 to confirm their attendance. Registration Fees: Once a participant has confirmed their attendance with the Carbone Clinic, the registration fee in the amount of $3750 will be due. All ten days must be attended and there are no make up days available. Room and board is the responsibility of the individual attendees. This training does not lead to any type of certification. A certificate of attendance will be issued to each attendee that completes the training. CEUs will be available for BCBAs and BCABAs.
