I'm no expert, but this is the way it seems to me: Coming under instructional

control is learning that following your directions leads to good things

happening. It is a generalization from many trials/occasions in which

following your directions did lead to good things happening. Presumable, for

these children, attending to reinforcing stimuli has led to reinforcement. Now,

do the same with common objects. Get the child's attention and

pair it with the common object and provide reinforcement. Do that until

presenting the common object elicits attention (and reinforcement for the child)

and then gradually shift the reinforcement schedule from " every

time " to " once in a while. "

attend to reinforcing stimuli but not common objects. How do I bring common

objects under instructional control? I think, to present, and say:

reinforce. Would this be right?
