Guest guest
Well, on a positive note, I watched the movie with my oldest son, who has been struggling with his little brother's meltdowns. My oldest son is 9, and really struggles, to be honest. At first it was the attention the other kids got for their diagnoses. All of the therapists came to see them. Everyone comes up and talks about how wonderful the " boys " are doing in front of him. He gets a lot of attention from me, but he is aware that he is not the child of mine that everyone is interested in. When I made the Early Learner and Evy's Progress movies, it was with a sense of guilt over not being able to do one for him. So having him respond well to the movie--watching these kids meltdown and act just like Evy--well, it helped him broaden his mind about why his brother is so hard. It's not personal. But how do you teach that. So, I found the movie a good talking off point to widen my eldest son's perspective. Now, I also don't think you could make an " Autism movie " that shows success without inspiring jealousy. Hey, wouldn't I love it if my boys had savant skills? Evy forgot the word toilet three times yesterday. " Hey mom, what's that thing that flushes and the water goes around and around??? " A toilet, Evy. " Oh yeah, All toilets lead to the ocean, right? " Only in the movies, dear (Finding Nemo). But I think that Savant skills are a real blessing to those parents who have to work so hard to get their children to learn every small thing. What a joy it must be to see some thing, even anything, come easily. I'm happy for them. I'm sure her struggle was glossed over Hollywood style. It was nice to show the blessing of services and good therapists making such a difference in those boys lives. And don't forget that this mother is one of us. And she gave back, establishing a foundation to help other families who need help. Point is, there is pain and joy in every situation. One thing constantly on my mind as my children are doing better and better are those awful figures on depression and suicide among adults with Asperger's. While your child is licking the floor, give thanks that the pain of lost expectations is yours alone. Consider the pain of watching your child hurt and lonely because they are aware enough to want friendships, but are too different or socially awkward to have them. Functioning level isn't everything. t Burk juliet@... www.autismteachingtools.com Home of " The Early Learner at Home "
Guest guest
Do you know if this movie is available on dvd at the video store? Talking about TV shows, I saw an old Touched by an Angel on Sunday on the W channel and it was about a young kid who had La Tourette syndrome. It was very touching, especially to see how people who don't know about a condition can presume and things can turn bad. It made me cry and reminded me of many years of rejection for my son, because he was different. It is going much better since he is in a new school.
