Guest guest
, Having been down that road with my youngest daughter (Subtotal thyroidectomy at 17), you should be insisting that they use the Pedi lab tests on your son, NOT the adult labs. First, children's TSH's tend to run higher than adults do. That said, they have thyroid tests for children that are Gender/Age specific. My grandson's FP doctor ran them on him. He was 12 at the time and fell into the Male (of course) age 11 to 15 range. He's now on thryoid hormone and, while he's never had a growth problem (was 14 in May and about 5'10") he has problems with constipation and then loose stools (as do I) and his weight. He's about 190-200 lbs now, as football season takes some of the weight off of him. The good thing is he doesn't gain it back, so his growth in height is helping slim him down. He and his mother go to Micheal Sullivan, PA, in Irving, that is listed on the Group's Doctor's List. She is on Armour...I can't remember if Ian is, or not...but I think he is too. Faye Subject: My Son's recent labsTo: Texas_Thyroid_Groups Date: Monday, December 8, 2008, 2:04 PMHi all, I just got back from the doctor's office and we've got my younger son's (13 yr. old) first thyroid labs. The Frees are mid to upper range, TSH is 2.39 (range 0.5-4.30), so that looks perfect. But, his Thyroglobulin antibodies are positive (TPO is negative), so it's conclusive that he has Hashi's. At his last appt, the doc had done a sonogram and saw some very odd cysts and his thyroid is very vascular. We've started him on Synthroid (I'll wait to push for Armour). The curious thing about this son is that the ONLY thyroid symptom (hypo) is constipation. He also claims to have memory issues as he doesn't do great on tests at school (lots of rote stuff in 7th grade), so we'll see if this helps - his H/W and quiz grades are high. There's already been a noticeable improvement in disposition and schoolwork for my older son. I really do want to encourage all of you with teenage kids (and even younger really) to trust your instincts on thus and push for a comprehensive analysis (including sonogram), as I really feel this will help my boys alot. It can be very difficult to see this problem since the docs will tell you that teenage boys are just like this. I had suspected my oldest was hypo 5 years ago and while a GF diet and nutrients have helped, the lack of energy he had for years was just not normal (again, despite pediatrician telling me it was). Guest guest
Faye, Thanks for the reminder about the pedi labs. Labcorp did provide those ranges when my older son was first tested, but Quest does not seem to (I'll look and see if they are on their website). As far as your grandson and your GI issues, have you been tested for celiac/gluten intolerance? It often goes hand in hand with hypothyroidism, in particular when it strikes kids. I'll post the research article in the celiac/gluten intolerance folder I put in the files under the Related Issues and Diseases folder. For many of us, the blood tests will be negative, but the stool test is far more accurate and picks up the antibodies where they start (in the GI tract). I'm not certain Sullivan will work for me as I don't think he's as aggressive in treatment and likely wouldn't be as flexible as I would like it optimizing my boys' thyroid. That's based on a couple of friends I have who have remained terribly hypo over a long period of time. Now it may be because they weren't assertive enough, so maybe I should reconsider him, if others have found he's okay with a TSH near 1.0 (Jan reminded me this is documented in the online Thyroid book for Hashi's patients). I also think I want them on Armour as I'm now reading that the synthetics seem to become less effective over time, but current doc should be okay with that. I really need to get to accupunturist and have her test me as to whether the levothroid and Cytomel are still good for me. Thanks for the feedback - I really appreciate it. Guest guest
I see Iva Lim Peck in Plano, although I haven't been to her for over a year since I was doing some laser accupuncture treatments with a guy in Denton. He just retired, so I will be going back to Dr. Iva. She is very good. She is in practice with her husband, so if you do try to get an appt, make sure to ask for one with her. Her husband is also good, but I just don't like his bedside manner - he tries to be funny and he's not (IMHO), although he's good with kids. She has helped me alot with allergic reactions, including one to the CSM (for the neurotoxins). She also is great for pain relief - that's why I went to her initially. She has all the certifications and training and uses NAET for treating allergies: http://integratedcenterfororientalmedicine.com/index.htm B. > > , what acupuncturist do you see? Guest guest
Thanks, . I’ve been taking one of my sons to see Dr. Kathi Maher in Arlington. She is helping immensely with allergies. I believe what she does is similar to NAET, but seems to be working a little better than NAET did for my son. Guest guest
Does Dr. Maher do any accupuncture. One thing we found was that since my son only got accupressure with no needles, his treatments weren't as effective. Dr. Iva wanted to use needles, but my younger son hates needles. The trip to Plano was also difficult during the school year (my boys go to school and Irving). One thing I want to see Dr. Iva for is to have her treat me for my reaction to Armour and try taking it again. . > > > > , what acupuncturist do you see? Guest guest
, So far she hasn’t done any acupuncture. I don’t know if she does or not. It is listed on the website. The woman who recommended her to me said that she had tried NAET and it didn’t last for her (or her kids). She said Dr. Kathi’s treatments really worked for all of them. I think it is a little difference than NAET. She (the patient) also said she’d had 5 miscarriages and Dr. Kathi did some work on her thyroid and after 1 or 2 treatments she got pregnant and carried to term. It got my attention because the woman said she’d tried a lot that didn’t work for her, but this did. I haven’t personally seen her yet, but my husband has seen her once. We are hoping she can help with whatever is going on with him. She specifically mentioned desensitizing the body to medications, so that is one thing she does do. We’ve seen some improvement in my son. He is a little less explosive emotionally and his shiners under his eyes are getting better. She’s been treating him for things like B vites, magnesium, protein, mold, vit c, amino acids, etc. Real building block things versus offending foods. She also did a little bit of work on my youngest who is turning out to be a slow talker at 2 years old. Might be coincidence, but he has started talking a lot more after a couple visits with her. Here’s her website if you are interested in more info…http://www.healthbyhandswellness.com/. Guest guest
Grace, Thanks so much for that link. A quick search of her newsletter archives has an excellent article on thyroid and Fibromyalgia: http://tinyurl.com/65tqpk 90% of FM patients have thyroid hormonal problems, which is something I keep preaching to folks - I have had so many friends that when I look at their labs, their Free T3 is often below range and Free T4 is barely within range. Many of these docs only look at Free T4 and TSH, and then of course, recommend all sorts of other (ongoing) treatments. Although, I can't find any info on that website wrt food reactions or celiac or gluten. So, that would be my only concern with her view that nutrients are always at the root. I totally agree that nutrients can be EXTREMLY helpful, but I think it's also important to understand why one is deficient. And, I too have found that all my NAET treatments did not take - but I attribute part of that due to the chronic disruption of my immune system by the toxins. I'm hoping that now that I've gotten rid of alot of those that the treatments might be more effective. I do know that my most negative reactions to past treatments were for toxins like heavy metals - my theory is that the treatment resulted in my body trying to get rid of them. However, in cases where detox pathways are damaged (she does seem to really look at that) and one isn't taking appropriate products to bind with and remove the toxins, they are just recirculated. Be well, B. > > > > > > , what acupuncturist do you see? Guest guest
, Just one comment wrt the celiac/gluten thing… I did ask her once if she thought she’d be able to “heal” his gluten reaction/celiac. (Kind of testing what she’d say since I understand it will most likely be a lifelong issue, barring new discoveries.) Anyway…I was impressed that she told me he will likely always be sensitive at least to some degree and have to watch his reaction to gluten and avoid as much as possible. So, I think she hopes to minimize contributing factors and maybe the severity, but doesn’t think she can make the celiac disappear. That’s my interpretation, at least. My husband’s small intestine biopsies came back negative. I think they checked for h.pylori in addition to celiac. I know he might still be positive for celiac, but he’s pretty convinced it is not an issue with the two conventional (and I know inconclusive) tests being negative. I will pray he is right and we find the root of the issue somewhere else. At least we’re gluten free at home. My history tends to suggest I could be the celiac gene carrier, but I didn’t do that full panel. I’d like to get the tests to see if my detox pathways work okay or if that is one of my issues. I had a terrible reaction to (stupidly) taking LSD in college (precipitated my thyroid diagnosis) and I wonder if it could have been related to my body not being able to dump the toxins. I also grew up in the middle of a bunch of fields and used to watch the crop dusters fly next to and over my house. Lovely. Anyway…enough off list discussion…sorry about that, Jan.
