Part of the etiology of this error pattern was the therapist's tendency to use a verbal reinforcement that also included the response. For example-- therapist: What is this? child: cat therapist: " cat! that's right. It is a cat. " Also, if you can give immediate verbal praise or pop an edible reinforcer IMMEDIATELY into the child's mouth, that will also help. Since this is an error pattern, you might need to stop using the known stimuli temporarily & concentrate on SLOWLY prompting novile stimuli. Another helpful tip is having the child tap for syllables.
