Strattera?

Has anyone tried it on their child? We're considering it with our

five-year-old because his inability to focus and pay attention is one of

his biggest

problems. Of course, we're very nervous about the idea, so I thought I'd ask

other parents out there.

My six-year-old son is currently taking Straterra, though we have gone down to a

teeny dose (10 mg, which we are likely to cut out altogether). My husband and I

thought that it was helping him at first, but recently we became concerned that

it was increasing his repetitive behaviors and causing what I can only describe

as sad spells (when he'd cry and become overwrought for no apparent reason). We

see a child psychiatrist from NIH (who moonlights to see private patients), who

has monitored the case very closely but still cannot answer our questions about

possible side effects. The drug is new, as you no doubt know, and--because it

builds up in the system over time--can be tricky to assess. Early on, the only

obvious side effect was sedation (and a little bit of trouble with bladder

control, as we saw accidents that our little guy hadn't had in years. Note that

this would be a reverse reaction, since Straterra is prescribed for

bedwetting!). You might want to keep a log of behaviors/school reports, etc.

from before you start any medication (in addition to a log after you start) so

that you have a little more to rely on than memory if any problems arise. Of

course, there are always variables we don't even think of . . .

Hope this is helpful. --Jacquie
