Below is what is going on with the City of Ft. Worth. The facts are

nice to have but facts don't tell the whole story. Reading the facts

are one thing but living the life is another. I would like to include

the divorce statistics, the hurdles to obtaining a FAPE (more than

just

a " basic " education), the stories of school districts spending $$$$ on

fighting due processes rather than spending the $$$$ to provide

services, treatment from dr.s who don't support a parents search for

alternative treatments (GFCF diet, toxicity testing) or are

questioning

the mercury/vaccine issue (I personally experienced this yesterday

attempting to inquire about a number of things but that's another

story).

The lack of finding providers, therapists, schools, specifically in

the

Ft. Worth area. Especially how deplorable the Texas Education System

is

in providing services to our students compared to states I've read

about like arizona & I can't think of the one which one of the members

just recently moved to in which she was telling how the coordinator??

threw the IEP from Texas in the trash.

I hope parents from Ft. Worth really step up and share. I know so many

of us resort to driving to Grapevine, Frisco, etc. because there isn't

that much here. Like I said below, it seems like there is a huge void

in an the area between North Dallas, Austin and Houston exists.

Well, this is going to be sooo long now.

Is there anything you would like to share or contribute?

looking for? I didn't think I would find it this fast and I know we

are

in a hurry so I thought I'd send it to you first. I will call Arden as

soon as I find my phone & get the girls situated. I'll try to make it

in a few minutes.

Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person's ability to

communicate and develop social relationships and is often accompanied

by extreme behavioral challenges. Autism spectrum disorders are

diagnosed in 1 in 150 children in the United States, affecting four

times as many boys as girls. The diagnosis of autism has increased

tenfold in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose

cause and cure remain unknown.

Did you know…

1 in 150 children is diagnosed with autism

1 in 94 boys is on the autism spectrum

67 children are diagnosed per day

A new case is diagnosed almost every 20 minutes

More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS,

diabetes & cancer combined

Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the

U.S.

Autism costs the nation over $90 billion per year, a figure expected

to

double in the next decade

Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less

prevalent childhood diseases

Boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism

There is no medical detection or cure for autism

Incidence vs. Private Funding

Leukemia: Affects 1 in 25,000 / Funding: $310 million

Muscular Dystrophy: Affects 1 in 20,000 / Funding: $175 million

Pediatric AIDS: Affects 1 in 8,000 / Funding: $394 million

Juvenile Diabetes: Affects 1 in 500 / Funding: $130 million

Autism: Affects 1 in 150 / Funding: $15 million

National Institutes of Health Funds Allocation

Total 2005 NIH budget: $29 billion

Of this, only $100 million goes towards autism research. This

represents 0.3% of total NIH funding.

Hi Kristi,

This is . I had called to speak to a while back. I

saw the email about the Town Hall meeting about events going on in our

community. April is Autism Awareness month.

Way back then I wanted to bring to 's attention the difficulties

families in the Ft. Worth area face when coping with a child who has

one of the developmental disabilities on the autism spectrum. The

frustration of trying to find information and services and feelings of

isolation! There is such a lack of services, doctors who understand,

schools, etc. Everyone usually ends up going to Grapevine, North

Dallas

and other areas to find doctors to help treat their children, schools

for their special kids, everything! It is so frustrating! In our area

it seems Ft. Worth is in a bubble when it comes to this.

I wanted to introduce him to other parents in Ft. Worth who have had

to

fight for every little gain in their child's education and sometimes

failing continuously. I could go on and on but I HAVE to get back to

the girls!

I've included some links to other stories about different aspects of

autism just to give him a glimpse into this unseen world and the many

ways it affects those whose lives are touched with autism. (This was

quickly done and I am not completely satisfied with it but it's a

start).

Take Action on Medicaid Issue

The House of Representatives is set to vote TODAY on H.R. 5613,

Protecting the Medicaid Safety Net Act of 2008. It was earlier

reported

that the bill was not on the calendar, but the bill is in fact

expected

to come up for a vote tonight. While the legislation has broad

bipartisan support, and is expected to pass easily, the President has

issued a Statement of Administration Policy indicating he will veto

the

bill. Advocates and their supporters are encouraged to contact their

Members of Congress and urge them to vote YES on H.R. 5613, the

Protecting the Medicaid Safety Net Act of 2008. The following are

talking points on the legislation:

Medicaid is a lifeline for many individuals with autism and their

families. It is the nation ' s primary way of financing and delivering

community-based health and long-term services to children and adults

with developmental disabilities.

Medicaid serves nearly 60 million low-income Americans, including an

estimated 9.9 million people with disabilities and accounts for an

estimated 86 percent of public spending on developmental disabilities

services.

The Bush Administration ' s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

(CMS) has issued several changes to Medicaid that could have a

devastating impact on Medicaid beneficiaries or the safety net

providers that serve them. According to some estimates, these rules

will reduce federal financing for Medicaid by $15 billion over five

years.

These changes will shift significant Medicaid costs to states at a

time

when the economy is in a downturn and many states are either

experiencing declining revenues-or bracing for revenues to start

falling.

H.R. 5613, the Protecting the Medicaid Safety Net Act of 2008 would

impose a one year moratorium on these and other dangerous regulations,

and would allow Congress time to identify solutions to the problems

affecting Medicaid. I strongly urge you to vote YES on this important

legislation.

Nick did some research on the divorce rate a few years ago. You can

reach him through http://www.4accord.com

It's been a while since I read his book, but I'm thinking the rate is

astronomically high - maybe 85% or so.

Hi

I thought I would share this all with you from my daughter's point of view.

Later today I will share mine.  She had to write a speech about herself for a

class.  I took out her name just for safety reasons.

Hi, My name is xxxx and I am going to tell you about my family, not just about

me.  When we were given this assignment I thought about what I would tell all of

you about me.  What I wanted you to know.  At first I thought I would tell you

that I like to draw and that I am in band.  But then, I decided I would share

with you the story of my special brother.  So here it goes!

My brother is 10 years old.  He loves to read, play video games and most of all

he loves dogs.  He is like most brothers.  He can annoying, and messy but he is

also the most cool brother around.

You see my brother is special not only because he is my brother but because he

has Asperger¢s.  Just in case you don¢t know Asperger¢s is a form of autism.

But I don¢t look nor does my family look at his disabilities instead we look at

his amazing abilities.  He has this amazing smile that will light up and put a

smile on anyone¢s face!  He has the greatest curliest hair.

He has the amazing ability to teach me new things everyday!

If you ever met my brother you would think he was shy, perhaps quirky but you

would never know that he had Asperger¢s.

He is smart and has the ability to do math in his head, can beat video games or

help me beat them..  He might get nervous at new situations, restaurants and

thunderstorms but if you think about don¢t we all?

I decided to tell you about my brother because you see, I have seen people shy

away from someone or him just because they appear different.  But you know, you

might really miss a good opportunity to have a great friend!

Having him in our life has made me a much better person.  I am not afraid to go

up and introduce myself to someone at school.  I met my best friend that way.

She looked lost and didn¢t have a place to sit at, at lunch time.  I asked her

if she would like to join my friends and I and she did.

I look at my brother as special because you see he wants to be like, you and

me.  He wants to have friends, but he doesn¢t know how?  This might seem strange

but its not! In fact it¢s a little sad!  He wants to play sports just like all

of us, but he may not be as good as us, so guess what, sometimes he won¢t even

try?  He is probably the kid you see by himself at the lunch table, or on a

playground alone!

I am asking all of you to think twice before you poke fun!

I am also going to tell you about a special league that my whole family works

with in one way or another.  It is the Miracle League of Frisco.  This is a

league for kids with special needs.  They get to bowl, play soccer, baseball and

even gymnastics.  My brother plays, I am a buddy!  Being a buddy is one of the

most rewarding experiences in my life!  My buddy uses sign language to

communicate.  I know some because my brother didn¢t talk for a while and then I

have learned more for my buddy.  My dad coaches the baseball team and my mom she

is helping get the word out there.

We want all kids with disabilities to have the opportunity to play, we need

buddies who are willing to give up perhaps 2 hours a week to help a kid play.

Please think twice when you see someone different, think that this person just

needs a friend.  Don¢t stare when you see a child having a melt down in the

store!

Thanks for listening and oh by the way, yes I do like to draw, read and I am in

the band!

But most importantly I am glad that I have my brother.

What a wonderful daughter you have! Siblings are often overlooked,

but they have a lot to offer, and they are part of the solution to

making this world friendlier to their brother or sister with a

disabiltiy. They are definitely worth listening to.

Thank you for sharing your daughter's speech.

That is so beautiful. You should be so proud of your family. It

reminds me of the Jr. High graduation speech that boy gave regarding

his disabled sister and the damaging use of the word " retard. "

Siblings of disabled children can have such powerful voices.

was met with a standing ovation.
