happy new year everyone

just got this interesting case - 22 year old female...healthy, very hyper, happy, she is really sweet and so lively....developed a vocal polyp (2 cm by 2 cm) that is causing hoarness. This was caused by successive voice abuse, partying for the last few years ever since her trip to europe in 2005.  surgeon wants to cut it out in july of 2008 after she is done with exams.  she wants to avoid surgery..i am not sure she can but we are going to try.

i have put her on voice rest and she has agreed to 3 days per week where she does not talk at all. i have encouraged her to stop going out to loud clubs and she has agreed to stay at home and hang out instead to get rid of or decrease this hoarse voice of hers. i have her seeing a vocal specialist.

i have prescribed the following

Wobenzym

UNDAs 2, 5, 37, 312

fish oils

Castor oil packs on throat with heat, on abdomen as well

off gluten, wheat and dairy

Calc flur 6X

1tbsp of organic honey mixed with 1tsp tumeric 5 x a day

lots of warming foods

warm herbal teas and lots of water

i also have her doing hydrotherapy 1 x a day - hot and cold compresses

Lamise,

In my previous career as a Speech-Language Pathologist I treated many

people with vocal cord polyps.

Highly effective treatments included:

-frequent small sips of water to hydrate the mucosa of the vocal

cords (VCs)

-limiting and/or reducing alcohol, tobacco and caffeine as they dry

out the VCs cords

-avoidance of whispering because it places strain on the VCs by

keeping them in an open posture for prolonged periods of time

-lip fluttering and humming at the same time as it encourages normal

VC oscillation (also good as a warm-up for speakers and singers. This

can be done several times a day. Important that voice is turned on,

e.g., with a /k/ sound voice is off but with a /g/ sound voice is on.

-steam inhalation, breathe in through the mouth

- and of course vocal rest

-Craniosacral therapy to relax the fascia and other tissues around

the hyoid bone
