One of the most frequently asked questions we get is about research showing the effectiveness of the RDI™ Program. Parents often want this information to show the professionals in their child's life or to their child's school, and professionals often want this information as a more objective measure than anecdotal stories.During the workshop I will cover the current research in detail and discuss plans for future research. So far, our preliminary study clearly demonstrates the power of the RDI™ model to dramatically change the lives of children on the spectrum. In our recently completed study, 17 children undergoing the RDI™ Program were compared to 14 similar children receiving on average, more than twice the amount of intensive intervention services. The study found the following:RDI™ helps children succeed in regular classrooms. The percentage of RDI™ Program children succeeding independently in regular classrooms, went from 12 to 82 percent in less than 18 months on average. In the same period, 70 percent of the RDI™ Program children improved their diagnostic category on the most respected testing instrument for Autism, Asperger's, and PDD — the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). Further, over 50 percent of the RDI™ Program group scored in the Non-autism category by the follow-up testing. In contrast, no child in the comparison group improved their diagnostic category. Similarly, no single comparison-group child progressed into a typical classroom without needing a one-on-one aide. While this is an initial study and the research paper points out a number of reasons to limit conclusions, there is no doubt the RDI™ Program has proven to be an extremely powerful method of addressing the core deficits of autism spectrum conditions. To read the whole study, you can download it here: http://www.rdiconnect.com/SummaryofRDIResearch_001.htmThis study is one of the reasons why Autism experts like Dr. R. Hobson declared, " (RDI) promises to change our view of what treatment may achieve, " and why Dr. Minshew, Director, NICHD Collaborative Program of Excellence in Autism, agreed, " ... the Relationship Development Intervention Program may help change beliefs of what is possible for individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
