Guest guest
it's never a good idea to stop antibiotics mid stream. you should always take them through to the end. otherwise, the 'bug' can come back resistant to that antibiotic and others in that family making it necessary to take stronger antibiotics for longer periods of time. strep can kill people. the virus can attack the heart. that's why antibiotics are necessary when strep is diagnosed. you can google strep to find out lots of info on it. not bad thinking on the doctor's part to give a script for the sibling as the close contact would indicate probable exposure and save a trip back to the doctor for that child. Subject: Questions re: treating strep with Cefdinir & children w/ autism To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Date: Saturday, April 26, 2008, 12:46 PM Recently I've begun to question the biomedical aspects of autism and ran across the articles about autism and the high use of antibiotics to treat multiple ear infections in infants. In something I read while reading about the antibiotics something was mentioned about the prevalence of strep in autistic children. I can't remember exactly where it was and I havent been able to find it again. Tuesday my 5 yr. old was dx with strep (I was surprised bc for the most part she didn't act sick) (she has PDD-NOS) & the nurse practioner prescribed Cefdinir for her and her 2 yr. old sister (who wasn't tested for strep but since they are siblings was prescribed Cefdinir also). The 2 yr. old was given a breathing treatment and was prescribed Albuterol as well. I wanted to discuss the GFCG diet & mercury in vaccines & quickly ran off something from online as well as an info. flyer about neurotransmitter testing. After the change in demeanor to guarded and vague in any discussion regarding these issues I decided it's time to look for another doctor (she said she would have to give the information to Dr. Natterer to look over & I still have yet to hear from her). Now I recall her quickness to point out the serious problems of untreated strep and yet no mention of any side effects from the antibiotics. My daughter had numerous ear infections all treated with antibiotics, my concerns about her not reaching her milestones were dismissed, the flu vaccines and immunizations are greatly pushed in their office (in fact, there is a certificate on the wall from Cook's rewarding them with 100% vaccination compliance) and now I don't trust anything they say at all!!!!! So, those of you who are more informed I need your opinion on a couple of things. I have only given one dose to each child of the Cefdinir so far. Do I go ahead and give my 5 yr. old the Cefdinir until I find a dr. I trust or is there an alternative or safer treatment? What about the 2 yr. old? Now I question both the Cefdinir and the Albuterol. You can email me offline as well. I am just not sure what to do because I don't know how long it is going to take for me to find another doctor. I am considering a DAN doctor but they are so far away (I live in Ft. Worth and they are in Coppell, Frisco or one of those cities in North Dallas that take like an hour plus to drive). They won't treat her for the strep will they? There's one pediatrician I've thought about switching to if she takes the girls insurance - Dr. Heflin. I know she's consistently been in Fort Worth Magazines Top 100 Doctors for 2-3 yrs. now but I don't know how receptive she's going to be to a parent who questions current accepted medical practices and asks a lot of questions. Guest guest
If your doctor thought Albuterol was necessary, there must be some breathing problems. Albuterol is a bronchial dilator that is frequently given to children with asthma or bronchitis. I'd be cautious about stopping it. My oldest son (not the one with autism) has had it prescribed a couple of times and it makes him a bit shaky and hyper. My great niece has also had it. She has been hospitalized several times when her asthma gets out of control. Personally, I just went through a bout with bronchitis and it's not fun. Felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest. Antibiotics helped immensely so I'd be careful about stopping anything. Nagla, who is on this list, is very knowledgeable about alternative treatments. Maybe she will reply soon. Guest guest
Anytime you start an antibiotic course, it's a good idea to finish the course. I always give my kids and me a very good probiotic after finishing the antibiotic course for at least a month to replenish the good gut bacteria. Strep infections and PANDAS: http://www.enzymestory.com/PANDAS.html http://intramural.nimh.nih.gov/pdn/web.htm Treatment for OCD part of PANDAS: http://intramural.nimh.nih.gov/pdn/web.htm Enzymes for viruses: http://www.enzymestuff.com/conditionviruses.htm http://www.tacanow.com/medical/comprehensive-anti-viral-autism.htm In my family we use a lot of natural antivirals like virastop, olive leaf extract, grapefruitseed extract. I keep several alternative treatment books on hand and look up symptoms etc.. and see the recommendations. Mu favorite books are: Encyclopedia of natural medicine by Murray and ph Pizzorno Prescription for Nutritional healing by phyllis A Balch Alternative Medicine by Burton Goldberg In terms of asthma, my daughter had severe asthma since she was 3 years old, we went the conventional route for several years using albuterol, steroids and inhalers, her asthma got worse and she was allergic to the propellent in the inhalers so she couldn't use them. We discovered that cutting down on dairy and eliminating it durings attacks helped, same with sugar and artificial ingredients (colors preservatives etc..) We also found that cod liver oil, large doses of vitamin C and Quericitin given daily, help a great deal. During severe attacks we used a nebulizer with albuterol, but the side effects were terrible, she gets shaky, her heart beats really fast, she cannot sleep, and it effects her breathing in an adverse way in less than 4 hours (she gets worse), so we decided to try acupuncture and immune boosting supplements(Colostrum) during severe attacks. This combination in addition to every thing else really worked and her asthma has almost disapperared now that she is 22. Guest guest
So what is a good probiotic? Also, I had remembered that in her formula they add DHA ? & I took the DHA when I was pregnant with both girls, which is essentially Omega 3 fatty acids, right? Now I know that a rich source of Omega 3 fatty acids is cod liver oil so when I went to Whole Foods (my first time) about a month ago I asked a lady & bought Nordic Naturals Children's DHA. The thought was good but implementing it hasn't been so great. I tried mixing it with pineapple juice and that hasn't been very effective. For example, this morning - just a couple of swallows and their glasses are still in the kitchen. I thought pineapple and orange juice were the 2 best to disguise it in. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks, > > Recently I've begun to question the biomedical aspects of autism and > ran across the articles about autism and the high use of antibiotics > to treat multiple ear infections in infants. Guest guest
Personally, I like Klaire Labs Ther Biotic Complete, and I like Thorne Lab's Lactobasillus Sporagenes. I have heard parents say good things ab out Kirkman's pro bio gold as well. When my son was younger I mixed all his supplements in a teaspoon of frozen, undilluted orange juice concentrate and used a medicine syringe to give it to him just like you would any important medicine that has to be taken. This worked for us until he learned to swallow pills. I see that Herb Mart and whole foods carry chewable acidophillis and they also have Nordic naturals chewable gel caps for kids (strawberry and another flavor, i cna't remember what it was).
