Lamise,Now that the heart beat has been detected, the risk of miscarriage is less than 10% at eight weeks, as long as the heart rate is at least 100 bpm (130 bpm is the usual rate for 8 weeks). I would focus on helping your patient to trust her own body again, which she will be learning for awhile after her unsettling experiences. Unfortunately, having two miscarriages as early as she did is not that uncommon and it is likely that the heart beat would not have been detectable for even the previous 7 week pregnancy.I would add flower essences into her regimen to help her to trust herself again. I just returned from the AANP and attended a session on prenatal care presented by Dr. Jean-Jacques Dugoua from Toronto. He recently published a book on pregnancy (can't recall exact title but its in my notes if you want it). Unfortunately his slides were not in the AANP proceedings and i'm waiting to get them from him via email. But from what I can recall he mentioned the value of acidophilus in the prevention of miscarriages, esp lactobacillus GG. Not the magic bullet by any means but a little clinical pearl. Hi, with two prior miscarriages, I would check for MTHFR gene mutation. I've seen several patients in this same situation where high dose of folate was key to maintaining pregnancy.
