In 2002, SMU created the Institute for Reading Research, whose primary mission is to promote reading skills through research in the areas of developing reading interventions for children at-risk for failing to learn to read, including children with mental retardation. Dr. Francesca , Assistant Research Professor with the project will describe a comprehensive reading program that has been implemented as part of a this longitudinal, large-scale research study in which effective methods for teaching elementary-aged children with cognitive disabilities have been analyzed. She will explain the curricular features that led to success of the students and highlight techniques for addressing language, fluency, and behavior.
