Guest guest
After reading the responses to my post from last night, I went back and re-read what I had typed. I clearly offended quite a few people, which certainly was not my intent. If my note gave the impression I was trivializing the issues facing higher-functioning kids and their families, I am truly sorry and I take full responsibility for my own poor wording. As pointed out, each one of us is faced with a unique set of challenges. Those challenges are real, frustrating, and life consuming. Those are commonalities among all parents, regardless of a diagnosis or severity. I made the mistake of doing something I see others do all the time...projecting. To offer a reason on why the media focuses on higher-functioning kids, I unfairly projected a perspective that I believe those outside the autism world may have. I did not intend to suggest that parents with higher-functioning kids have this perspective, or imply that their issues are less stressful than mine. Inside or outside the autism community, projecting our individual and unique circumstances as representative of the entire group is wrong. Again, I'm sorry that I offended anyone. - Clay
