Guest guest
My oldest who was most debilitated, never showed standard allergy signs of digestive/bowel problems. That is one reason we didn't go the " allergy " routed for a long time. I gues it is more appropriate to say " fool intolerance " instead of allergy. His sensory problems were HUGE. He just basically could not function. We had many people say " He seems so autistic, and yet, not completely. He seems ....odd. " Thank you very much. He talked, or screamed, all the time, and then, especially in social situations would completely withdraw and not talk for hours at a time. Taking out dairy/casein made a tremendous difference which we noticed by the fourth day. Better socialized, less crabby, no anxiety, patient and pleasant, no tantrum and screaming. If he is like my son and me, he is in a bit of pain. What you are seeing is a " false " anxiety. He appears anxious becomes his nervous system in reacting wrong. We tried to anti-anxiety meds and it was a disaster. You may want to wait on that. The meltdowns and fears sound so familiar. I am not sure what ODD referes to. My answer would be Yes, it is definitely worth a try. Take out the dairy and see if it helps. We were casein-free for 7 weeks before starting Peptizyde. When the enzymes arrived we switched immediately to enzyems and went back to dairy products with no reaction at all. So for us the enzymes did the same job as no dairy. We also started Zyme Prime to catch any other food sensitivites. I decided to do that after I read about other parents who continued to be 100% GFCF finding even greater improvement after adding the enzymes. So I figured I could either start guessing at food problems and start eliminating all kinds of things. Or go with the enzymes and do a clean sweep right off. But hopefully you will see results either way. I am sorry to here about your son who is suffering. My is 9 now and doing well. .
Guest guest
Hello. The purple under the eyes and rosy cheeks are classic symptoms of phenol intolerance. I have written phenol information for my site. http://home.pacbell.net/cscomp/phenol.htm I have read several parents here say that enzymes also helped with their child's phenol difficulties. I hope to update my phenol info to include that information in the next several days. My son also did not have any readily apparent food difficulties or skin problems, and he was helped enormously by the gfcf diet.
Guest guest
My son was dx with PDD when he was 2 (nobody in my family believed that my son have problem and I was all alone), I put my son in the early intervention program for 9 months to one year and found some improvement. At 4 year old my son started special ed in the school system and then again got some more improvement but still he was very delay on his speech and motor skill. Another biggest problem we had was that my son didn't grow much, we took 1 to 2 hours for each meal and at the end of each meal he throw up and got everything out! My son stay small most of his life and we cannot not find anything else wrong with him, there were no skin problem, no BM problem, no red ears and in fact he was very healthy (in term of not getting sick) most of the time but he was just tiny and not eating! About 1 year ago when we found out about the GFCF diet we decided to try it. 1st we stop the milk (I forced him to take a cup of milk every morning so that he will have something to keep him alive). Surprisingly by just eliminating the milk it turns my son around!!!… The very 1st day of eliminating the milk my son started to eat and seem to be much happier and we can see him grow everyday! Later on we started GF and also found more improvements but not as sudden as with CF. My son is now 5 and still kind of tiny but catching up, he seem much happier and aware of everything which going on around him , over all we have to thank to the GFCF diet but of cause he is now allergic to many other foods and which is why we are trying Devin's Enzymes. I think that you will have to go through the same roots we all did and also try Devin's enzymes at the same time and see what happen, I am sure this diet and the enzymes will help your kid, God bless you and good luck! Guest guest
Sally, I have heard that these symptoms could be from food allergies, especially the long eyelashes and dark circles under eyes. My son also has both of these. His eyelashes are incredibly long. I wish I had them, LOL!! The rosy cheeks and purple under eyes could also be from Phenols in the foods your child is eating. We have found that the GFCF diet has helped with my son's "OCD behaviors" or stimming, and also his hyperactivity and focus. Good luck with everything. (Aidan's mom) He noted my son's long silky eyelashes, purple under his eyes, and rosey cheeks. (Anyone else heard that these are signs of food allergies?) Guest guest
Sorry it has been a couple of days on your questions. I see no one else took a shot at them, so I will try. > What is the purpose of the epsom salt baths? To provide magnesium and sulphur to the body. Magnesium helps with calcium absorption and hyperness (hence the baths are " calming " ). Sulphur is needed to assist with the sulphur transferase system, which processes phenols (food dyes and high phenol foods). See the techical description at the end of this post. I got this version from another list. You can also search for Dr. Rosemary Waring and sulphur transferase on the internet. > What effect does adding EFAs to the diet have? I think they help strengthen the immune system, help in gut repair and function, and liver cleansing. From GSDL: " Throughout our lives we need EFAs to maintain proper nerve signaling and function. Maintaining a proper balance between the various families of dietary fats (omega-3, omega-6, omega-9, saturated, and cholesterol) may be one of the most important preventative measures a person can take to reduce the likelihood of developing one of the chronic diseases of modern civilization, such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, irritable bowel syndrome, and autoimmune disease. " Short version: http://www.autism-treatment.com/efa-thf.htm Long version: http://www.gsdl.com/assessments/fattyacids/appguide/index.html > If the enzymes are mixed with juice, should the juice be totally > consumed before beginning a meal or can it be taken with the meal? No, the juice can be entirely consumed before the meal, or during the meal. The idea is to have the enzymes in solution in the stomach at the same time as the food. They will even work some if the juice is consumed after the meal but this isn't the best way. > Can I mix ProBio Gold in with my enzymes and juice before a meal (say 2 hours if kept cold) or will it turn to sludge? Our current probiotic includes psyllium so it has to be mixed just before use. Right off I would think it is okay. There is no problem mixing probio gold or other supplements with the enzymes in with the juice ahead of time. I just don't know if the psyllium itself would be affected (sounds like a Devin question). . Here is the TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION: Sulphur Transferase Abnormalities Waring (1993), encouraged and supported by O'Reilly (1993) and other parents, has published data which convincingly demonstrates deficiencies in the sulphur-transferase capabilities of people with autism. They have demonstrated also that this inadequacy is the consequence not of an absence of the responsible enzyme (sulphur transferase) but of the sulphate ions which are needed if the sulphation is to be accomplished. If this sulphation process is not functioning satisfactorily there are many possible consequences which may be of relevance in the autistic syndrome. These have been described elsewhere (Waring 1993). It is worth recording that similar deficiencies have been reported in people with migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, jaundice and other allergic conditions all of which are frequently reported as being common in the families of people with autism. I am unaware of any survey which actually demonstrates this and nothing better than anecdotal evidence exists. Clearly, if there is a deficit of available sulphate in the body attempts can be made to replace it. Unfortunately, sulphate ions are not absorbed from the gut so this route is not a possibility. The main source of free sulphate in the body is the amino acid " cysteine " which is obtained from the breakdown of appropriate protein material and it is this stage which may be faulty in people with autism. Some parents have attempted to combat this by feeding their children with abnormally large doses of cysteine in tablet or powder form but, as far as I am aware, the only result is a high concentration of urinary cysteine. Other parents have introduced other sulphur containing amino-acids to the diet and claim these to be beneficial. Unfortunately the claims are difficult if not impossible to assess since those parents experimenting with this intervention are likely to be experimenting simultaneously with many others. Interestingly, the sulphur containing amino-acid " Taurine " which may be given to patients for this purpose, is reported as having an anti-opioid effect (Braverman 1987). Since free sulphate is not absorbed orally, parents have been experimenting with alternative routes. One route which is increasing in popularity, is the percutaneous one. Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salts) are placed in the bath water in the hope that the sulphate will enter the body, if not via the back door, via an alternative route. Many parents have claimed benefits from this therapy and some high functioning adults have tried it for themselves. The majority claim positive changes in behaviour but some of the high functioning people have reported increased irritability (and so stopped using this therapy). Any perceived benefits may, of course, be totally unrelated to the sulphate element of the salts. It could be that the Magnesium (which is often supplied as a supplement to people with autism,) is the significant component. The question arises as to whether sulphate ions could enter the body in this way but, if so, it could provide an intellectually satisfying explanation for the long history of the use of spas in the treatment of rheumatic conditions. Sulphur transferase activity is important for many biological reaction in the body and some of these may be of relevance in the aetiology of autism. For example, the system is involved in the breakdown of bilirubin and biliverdin, the breakdown products of haemoglobin which are seen where bruising has occurred. It may be pushing speculation a long way but it is possible that the dark rings so often seen around the eyes of people with autism may be evidence of a lack of activity within this system. This system is also required for the breakdown and removal of phenolic compounds, indeed the tests used for estimation of its activity relies upon the conversion of paracetamol to its sulphate. An inadequately functioning system will also result in abnormal metabolism of some neurotransmitters. In particular, serotonin, (5-HT) metabolism will be affected and the appearance of unusual metabolites (such as the hallucinogen bufotenin) could be predicted. Such an observation has been reported (Himwich 1972) but its significance is uncertain. Other Interfering Foodstuffs As indicated above, an adequately functional sulphur transferase system is a prerequisite for the removal of phenolic compounds from the body. Since the availability of available sulphate ions is finite, the same will apply to the ability of the body to deal with such compounds. Thus when certain foodstuffs with high phenolic content are eaten they will utilise the available sulphur transferase resources of the body and thus exacerbate the problems referred to above. Many parents have observed that apples, oranges and other citrus fruits, chocolate (possibly on account of the phenol flavouring vanillin) and certain other foods will induce severe deterioration in the behaviour of their children with autism. Interestingly, two parents (who must remain anonymous) have contacted me independently and stated that when this situation arises, they have observed that " Cranberry Juice " will markedly reduce or even eliminate these effects. Whether this due to the sulphur content of the juice or some other mechanism or whether the effects are imaginary remains to be determined. Some parents have found that there ate other foodstuffs which can cause problems; in particular they have removed all traces of pigment form the diet of the child ( 1995). Since all of these dietary exclusions tend to be in addition to gluten and casein removal, it is difficult to ascertain precisely which elements of the exclusion are of relevance to any reported improvements. Synthetic Colourings There has been considerable discussion in the media for many years about the involvement of synthetic pigments, in particular tartrazine, in worsening the symptoms of autism. Considerable anecdotal evidence exists for their role in increasing hyperactivity (where autism is not involved). Parental reports suggest that removal of synthetic pigments from the diet have, in the vast majority of cases, made no difference whatsoever. Guest guest
Hello, Isabelle! I can address two of your questions. My son took SerenAid several times in the past and it seemed to help only with wheat products. My son is sensitive to many foods, so we discontinued the use of SerenAid. Peptizyde has helped my son tolerate both wheat and dairy products. HN-Zyme Prime has helped my son tolerate foods high in phenols. SerenAid, Peptizyde and HN-Zyme Prime were all developed by Devin Houston, Ph.D. Dr. Houston's website is at www.houstonni.com. If your son reacted well to the removal of gluten, then taking Peptizyde could benefit him. It breaks down the proteins in wheat, dairy, soy and other foods. It may allow you to add those foods back to your child's diet. Maybe someone else can give you some advice about Secretin. Please let me know if you have any other questions. > Hi, > I just want to ask some questions to you all: > 1/ If we use already Secretine, is it possible, needed or not to use more > enzymes like Peptizide and HN Prime Zyme? > 2/ What differences did you remarked between the use of Serenaid Vs. > Peptizyde and HN Prime Zyme? Guest guest
Isabelle, I know I answered this for you privately, but I thought others may need an answer, too. Secretin is not an enzyme, but a hormone produced in response to other hormones and chemical and mechanical chemoreceptors. It causes the pancreas to release its stores of enzymes and bicarbonate, when food leaves the stomach into the duodenum. The enzymes you mentioned are quite different, in composition and potency, and address different issues, and this can be explained in more detail privately. Enzymes may help, even when dietary restriction does not. At the very least, you should notice better digestion and intestinal health. Right off the top of my head I would say Cranesbill (Geranium maculatum). Make a decoction by bringing some distilled water to a boil and adding the cranesbill herb (cut and sifted) and simmering for 30 minutes. Then strain it and have her take 1 to 2 teaspoonfuls in a glass of water twice a day. Some Raspberry and/or squaw vine will help to feed and tone the uterus. Cayenne would be of benefit too but I am not so sure your SIL is willing to go that route. For your second question, is your friend getting frantic? If so she would do much better just relaxing. Most people never get pregnant while stressed. Usually when they relax and just let nature happen it happens. As for the tincture, well that depends on what herbs she is buying. ACV works well with alkaloids but not much of anything else. There are never any guarantees on herbs and fertility. Not every woman is meant to be pregnant. Actually, a tea would work better than the capsules as it would get into her system much quicker. However, you can try a 50-50 alcohol/ACV tincture. That should cover most of the constituents in the herbs. Another big if on this is her diet but we won't go into that. Suffice it to say I mentioned it. ;-) -- Peace, love and light, Don Quai " Spirit sleeps in the mineral, breathes in the vegetable, dreams in the animal and wakes in man. Guest guest
Hello New Family! First of all, I'd like to share a couple of things with all of you and then I have some questions that maybe some of you can help me with. To start off I would like to share with you an incident that happened to me in 2nd or 3rd grade. I was standing in line waiting to come into the classroon. (This is around 1955-56 in the Silicon Valley of California) I was standing there looking around at everyone standing there like cattle. I vividly remember thinking at this very young age "What in the HELL am I doing here?? I don't belong on this planet!" I'm sure that probably sounds funny and weird, but it's the truth. Things have slowly happened to me over the years that have led me to believe that I was indeed from another planet. I used to kid about it with my friends saying "I'm an ET and from another planet." They would laugh and say "You sure are!" lol! The biggest problem I have is lights, for which I've been teased my whole life of being a vampire because of. I always go around shutting off lights and can barely stand them at all. I do everything in the dark. lol! But then I started having these "Dreams" about people from the Plaiedes. I had never heard of that term before, but in these dreams they would tell me all kinds of heavy duty things that I couldn't remember when I woke up. All I knew was that I loved them and they felt like they were family. They told me to buy Kitaro to listen to as I was meditating, so imagine my surprise when I went to your files and found Kitaro there! (to meditate to no less!) I had heard of Star-Seeds before, but never paid much attention to them. I never read a description of them until last week when Liane sent it through MySpace, because she had been on my Friends list for some time. As soon as I read what she had sent I immediately knew and started to cry, because that was most definitely ME that was described in that ditty about Star-Seeds!! That is what drew me to this group, although someone here had told me about it awhile ago. I have just been wanting to lay low and take in as much as I could, but I felt today that you needed to know more about me. I've had so many bizarre things happen in my life that people often think I'm making things up, but I'm not. They are very real and very true things. So here are some questions. Are all lightworkers Star-Seeds?? Is everyone here a Star-Seed also?? Are we all Plaideians? Or are we from different star systems? And my biggest question of all is this. I am a very strong empath, but I haven't learned how to block out all the pain I feel from everyone. Can someone tell me how to do that?? I can barely stand to go out of the house and I really have a hard time being around people for an extended amount of time because I take in so much of their pain. I have made myself sick from their illnesses also. It's just all too overwhelming at times. I can't listen to the news or watch anything on TV that involves any kind of torture or pain to women, children or animals. Well, I've gabbed your ears off enough. I hope I didn't bore you all and I pray that someone can help me. Thank you all for listening. Love and blessings to all....
