Amy,

It seems to me that the liver must be quite affected despite normal enzymes. Low albumin definitely suggests liver problem. I think proteolytic enzymes can be helpful for ascites - like Wobenzyme at high doses. Also, liver drainage with 2,20,48,258 would be one possible combo. Chelidoniumplex may be supportive. My only patients that ever developed ascites had liver cancer or liver mets but definitely the low albumin is the biggy here. Good luck.

Any suggestions for decreasing ascites? 69yo female patient undergoing yet another round of chemotherapy forher cancer has developed ascites. Her cancer has been unspecified forits entire history. The cells of origin are unknown and currently theyhaven't been able to find any specific tumor, but her blood cancermarkers keep elevating. Her current chemotherapy regimen is the firstin some time that seems to be working to decrease these counts. However, she had 5 liters of milky fluid removed from her abdomen thispast week and the fluid continues to accumulate. Her oncologist saysthey have no idea where it is coming from. Albumin levels are 2.9. Na 137, K 4.1, CO2 28, Chloride 102. Total Protein 6.5. Liver enzymesall within normal range. My thought is albumin levels are not high enough to maintain healthyoncotic pressure. She tries to eat protein, but doesn't eat a lot ofanything.

So, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Amy Chadwick, NDPalmer, AK
