"Cutting carbon, improving health" - WHO/IFMSA/Health Canada 3rd WEBINAR - 28th June 2012 at 1800 (Geneva time)

“Cutting carbon, improving health”

You are cordially invited to the third webinar in the series on climate change and health, jointly organized by the World Health Organization, Health Canada and the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA), which will consider the health co-benefits of climate change mitigation policies.

This will take place on the 28th of June 2012 at 18:00 Central European Summer Time (Geneva)

(9:00 Los Angeles; 12:00 Ottawa; 17:00 London; 20:00 Moscow; 22:00 Delhi)

There is increasing evidence that well designed climate mitigation strategies can bring large, beneficial effects on a range of health outcomes. In some cases these health co-benefits would cover the investment costs of the mitigation measures. Aligning climate mitigation and public health goals can therefore bring major gains in human welfare, environmental protection, and economic efficiency. However, health co-benefits are rarely included in the main economic models that are designed to inform mitigation decisions, and are seldom included in international negotiations or national planning.

The webinar will include presentations and interactive discussion with leading international figures in the field, on the evidence, opportunities and constraints in achieving low-carbon, health promoting policies.

It will last 90 minutes with opportunities to ask questions to the panel.

Confirmed participants include:

Moderator: Kirby, former Chief Environment Correspondent for the BBC.

Range and scale of health co-benefits of climate mitigation policies: Professor Sir Andy Haines, Professor of Public Health & Primary Care, and Former Director, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Focus on energy access and clean air: Professor Veerabhadran Ramanathan, Chair, UNEP Asian Brown Cloud International Science Team, and Distinguished Professor of Climate Sciences, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California at San Diego.

Economics of health and climate change mitigation. Professor Anil Markandya, Scientific Director, The Basque Climate Change Research Centre.

Implementing healthy, low-carbon policies in practice. Dr. Pencheon, Director, UK National Health Service Sustainability Unit.

Implications for international negotiations. Dr. Diarmid -Lendrum, Team Leader, Climate Change and Health, World Health Organization.
