I am not sure I know what to think. I've been on Advair, I am on Symbicort. I think I'll email the link to the nurse at my doctors office.

M 10 year old son was on Advair and now on Symbicort. HE seems to be

doing much better on the Symbicort. This article makes me very nervous!

Suzanne, I'm 38 and on Symbicort and it makes me nervous yet I've found Symbicort works better for me than the other inhalers so I have to make the choice to breath or to not take meds and not breath. I'd rather breath, I think alot more info is put out there than there should be because all it does is scare the hell out of those of us who use these products that WORK for us!

This has been a big debate for some time. General concensus is in

adults the medicines used in Symbicort and Advair can cause

exacerbation of symptoms if used by themselves. However, both

Symbicort and Advair have an added corticosteroid to counterbalance

the effect. This is supposed to make them stable. I was on Advair

then switched to Symbicort, and their is a big difference in the way

the two effect me. The Symbicort does a fairly good job of

controlling that cough that I get (I don't wheeze - just cough). So,

for me I think the benefits far outweigh the risks. Breathe or not.

Also, a big chunk of the problem is that people tend to treat Advair

and Symbicort in the same way as their albuterol rescue inhalers.

They are not the same meds and can't be taken in the same way. Advair

and Symbicort are preventitive meds and are not effective once an

attack has already begun. So, it does no good to take them only when

you are having symptoms. That is when they have the power to make

things worse. They have to be taken daily whether you are having

symptoms or not. Once an attack has begun the only safe and effective

meds are the rescue meds.
