Guest guest
Yep it's true I'm pre -diabetic from the long term use of steroids. When my asthma is exacerbated the hospital covers me with insulin to keep my blood sugar levels down because the high doses causes them to sky rocket. When the doses are lowered I can get by with oral Metformin. When off steroids I don't need anything. TEE Subject: DiabetesTo: asthma Date: Monday, December 15, 2008, 2:02 PM Hi all,I am on the phone with a nurse representing my insurance company. She told me that there is a correlation between high blood sugar and corticosteroid use. Has anyone else heard this? I am pre-diabetic and sure don't need the 'help' that the steroids may give. Guest guest
Yes that is true, My nurse from my insurance company told me the same thing, They want me to monitor my blood sugar daily, I said NO that I'd have the dr's monitor it when I see him every 3 months Terry I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much. ~Mother Teddy Bear's Early Learning ProgramEstablished August of 1992 From: asthma [mailto:asthma ] On Behalf Of MikeSent: Monday, December 15, 2008 2:02 PMTo: asthma Subject: Diabetes Hi all,I am on the phone with a nurse representing my insurance company. Guest guest
It is quite common for prednisone to throw someone over the edge to full diabetes. I am type 1 so it was not caused by prednisone but it sure makes control hard! Thank goodness I have an insulin pump which makes corrections to blood sugar a lot easier! Guest guest
In general, the correlation is with steroids not corticosteroids and then only in continuous high dosages (like me). Asked my doc for you. He did say that it is one of the possible side effects, but that he has never had a patient with any significant effect on corticosteroids. Guest guest
Just so there is no confusion corticosteroids are the steroid component of controller meds (Advair/Symbicort). Steroids are prednisone, medrol, depomedrol, salumedrol.... Madeline > > > > Hi all, > > > > I am on the phone with a nurse representing my insurance company.
