You might want to talk to your Doctor about taking NAC - I think that is supposed to thin out the junk. I will try and pull something up for you. I've been taking this med for almost 20 years now, at least one round each winter, back when it was still prescription only and called Humibid. It was the *only* thing that would clear the gunk out. Is one supposed to be better than the other, in terms of effectiveness, safety, etc do you know? It doesn't - can't - cover every strain out there, so whilst you are protected against hte more common strains, you will still hvae no protection against others. It's also possible that if you were to come over here, or I were to go over to America, that we could pick up an infection, as the strains are different. So what was in my flu jab may well have been different to what was in yours. I think they base ours on whatever the common strains were in Canada the previous year as the UK gets them a year later. Still, always talk to your Doctor before taking any supplements. I have read that when taking NAC, be sure to take vitamin C with it. I don't know the answer to your other questions. In fact, I start it as soon as possible (even with a head cold before it hits my chest). You will find the generic " guafenesin " will work just as well and is half the price. Our local Walgreens will usually put their store brand generics on a buy one get one sale about twice a year. Theirs just says guafenesin on the bottle (which is the main ingredient). Guest guest Posted November 23, 2008 Report Share Posted November 23, 2008 I've had an awful something that's lasted over a week. Got some antibiotics on Wed and the doc suggested MucinexD. Within a couple of hours of 1/2 a dose I was very nauseous. I don't think that one partial does did anything good, but even if it did, I'll never take it again. The nausea was awful. Like I needed one more symptom. I'm really limited on meds due to sulfite intolerance and corn allergy so it's basically suffer through it for me. Just be careful. I've got some very sore ribs. Guest guest Posted November 23, 2008 Report Share Posted November 23, 2008 I use Mucinex when I get colds..usually when the cold progresses to thick congestion in my sinuses and chest..where I hear rattles. It says to drink plenty of water..it needs water to dilute the mucous. It works really good for me. It never clears up the cold entirely...time does that, but it does take away most of the rattles. I can get the same bottle of Mucinex at Target for 17.99 and at Walgreens they want almost 40.00 for the same thing. Ive never tried the generic Mucinex...
