Guest guest
Congrats on being home!!!! Hooray! I have been sent home with a line in a couple of times & didn't have any problem. The last time, they were doing IV antibiotics as an outpatient. They didn't want to admit me as they had rampent viral infections & 2-3 MRSA patients and I'm too high risk to be exposed to those. So I came in wearing a mask, got my IV & got wheeled back out wearing a mask. At least you don't get as many funny looks wearing a mask in the hospital! The site did get a bit sore after a couple of days and I had to be really careful to keep it dry. It'll be good if they need to shoot you full of antibiotics or salumedrol though. I'm not a wheezer either. I'm more a cougher & crackler than anything else. I do get what they call " reduced airflow " that they can hear, but hardly ever any wheezing. The tighter & worse I get, the less sounds I make! They usually pay more attention to my peakflows and my O2 levels. Lots of crackles are usually pretty good as they mean I'm not completely bound up tighter than a drum yet! And yes, sometimes the respitatory therapists have to listen to me more than once, but it's the ER dr's who look at me the weirdest. " Well, you sound pretty clear. " Worst words ever spoken! So, you are very much not alone! I'm so glad you're out of the hospital! But don't be too heartbroken if you end up back there. Last time my 2nd stay was much, much shorter than the first time around, it was basically just a matter of getting me stabilized again. Sometimes the oral steroids just aren't quite enough and you need the IV stuff. Or at least in my case that's how it's been. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers and sending lots of good wishes your way! Kathleen > > Hi all! Congratulations to me. I have broken out of jail. Guest guest
Thanks all. I mentally knew I wasn't completely alien. Just helps to hear that others get the same reactions. This was my 4th hospitalization since May 16th at a week each round. So at least when the ER docs enter my name in their little computer there is some information they can draw on. I think your correct Kathleen, ER docs are the worst. I got one last year who classified himself as a mild asthmatic. He told me that unless my peak flows were under 100 he wouldn't even consider giving me anything. At that point my best was 630 & when I went to the ER I was only blowing a 180. Well into the red zone. I was a newbie to asthma and very scared. At least at this point I can tell the docs what I know about myself with some authority and they will usually listen. I also have a challenge with new docs because my oxygen levels are usually very high during the worst parts of an asthma attack. They don't start to drop until after my lungs start opening back up. Weird, huh? I am going to flirt with the rules here, but I just can't help it. I want to end my day with a smile....... another gem from my 9 year old.... Why did Beethoven get rid of his chickens? Because they kept saying Bach, Bach, Bach!!!! Love you all. Read you tomorrow. Madeline > > > > Hi all! Congratulations to me. I have broken out of jail. Guest guest
I & #39;ve had a PICC line in for the past 9 months. I & #39;m actually getting it out tomorrow to get a hickman catheter put in my chest. It & #39;s been infected twice and clotted several times. I am a staph carrier though so between that and steroid dependent I was bound to have trouble. I have a cover that I put over it in the shower but was told I could saran wrap or press and seal would work. I loved my line! I & #39;m on potassium IVs 14 hours a day as well as blood draws at least twice a week so its been very convenient. I & #39;m a bit nervous for the Hickman but excited too. My drs at this point are saying the line is probably permanent so this will be better. The thought of them basically using a knitting needle thread tubing through my jugular is a bit much though. Hopefully my asthma won & #39;t act up with the anesthia! Madeline wrote: > Hi all! Congratulations to me. I have broken out of jail. Guest guest
Welcome home! I do not wheeze much at all. I cough and bark too. Tonight, I have this mucus in my chest. I cough, clear, bark and just carry on, but I cannot get my airway clear. Right now, my deep in my throat and chest it feels raw. But, I do not have any wheezing. I hate this! No matter what I do or take, I just cannot get it clear. I have no idea what started it either. I will be up all night. When I get like this, I am afraid to sleep. I feel like I am suffocating. Marge MMR PICC Lines - wheezing Hi all! Congratulations to me. I have broken out of jail. They have left the Picc line in my arm for the next two weeks just in case I have to readmit. The hospital floor doc wasn't too happy with my air flow. I have a picc line inserted every time I admit because the steroids seem to have fried my veins, but I have never come home with one. Have any of you? Any tips? I understand that there is a fairly high risk of infection. They told me no showers. Only assisted tub baths. Also, is there anyone else here who doesn't wheeze? I will bark/cough, but in the past year I have only been told that I had a wheeze once. That was at my last admit after the one hour (20mg) albuterol thingy plus 6 more treatments of iptatroprium. I don't know if I just don't move enough air to wheeze or what. I have had a whole troop of people listening to me for the last several days, and I keep getting looked at funny because they don't hear a wheeze. I have read before that not all asthmatics wheeze, but I keep getting these wierd reactions. Just wondering if I am the lone ranger with this. Guest guest
Madeline, Glad you are home from the hospital. Since I have been on Asmanex, I never wheeze, even when I have a flare up or feel short of breath. I also feel a little frustrated because the drs can never hear what I am feeling. I hope you continue to get better, > > Hi all! Congratulations to me. I have broken out of jail. They have > left the Picc line in my arm for the next two weeks just in case I have > to readmit. Guest guest
Madeline, Congrats on being home!!!! I do not wheeze either. It took four years before I got a doctor that understood that not all asthmatics wheeze and actually looked into asthma. So I understand your frustration. Best Wishes, > > > > Hi all! Guest guest
Madeline I noticed you were up early this morning. Are you doing better at home. What medications did they give you? Guest guest
Hi Lou. Yes I woke up fairly early. My children started school last week (e strat & end early here - don't know why). So I got up with them. My husband really needed the break & I like to see them off. I didn't sleep to well though. This oxygen concentrator thing is going to take some getting used to. It is fairly loud & has a little bit of a funny smell. Not bad or musty or anything just different. I have been using a CPAP since October so I am used to something on my face, but it is very quiet. The hospital told me to use the oxygen with the CPAP at night because my levels are dropping too low when I sleep. I also have to use the oxygen during the day anytime I feel I need it??? I guess that is just going to be when I am active and feel my breathing get huffy because I don't have an pulse oximeter at home to test my o2 levels. I don't want to overuse this either and become completely dependent. Oh it is so confusing. I have an appt with my asthma specialist on Thursday. I am going to talk to him in depth then. My med list....are you sure you want to hear this... lol... I am a walking drugstore. Symbicort, Xolair injections, Spiriva, Singulair, Clarinex, Zyflo, nebulizer albuterol, and prednisone - these for the asthma (fat lot of good they are doing at the moment!!!!) Protonix, Xanax, Nystatin, Ambien - to combat prednisone side effects Then last but not least - water pill and cumatin - although I think we will discontinue both of those at the end of the week Madeline > > > > > > Hi all! Congratulations to me. I have broken out of jail. > > >
Guest guest
Madeline, I too am supposed to sleep with oxygen. I have my concentrator in the front room and I can not hear it from my bedroom. I have a 50 hose that I use. Also the concentrator puts out a lot of heat. It's okay in winter but not so in Summer. I live in central Texas and it's really been hot here. They brought me a new hose and I couldn't tolerate the smell. Now they bring me clear hoses and I put them out to air and gets the smell out before I use them. It was still drying out my head so bad that about two hours was all I could stand. They then brought me a container that you put distilled water in and the oxygen goes through there. I use it in the daytime when something triggers my asthma. The first thing I do is put on the coffee pot. Take 2 whiffs of Atrovent and put the oxygen on. I don't know about everyone else but it takes me about two day to get over a mild attack. Your medication is similiar to mine, except for the Cumatin. Good to know you are better and pray that you will get better every day. Haven't heard anything about Terry. Sure hope she is Okay. Hugs and friendship......Lou > > > >> > > > Hi all! Congratulations to me. I have broken out of jail.> > >> >>
