Guest guest
The other night, I mentioned that the doctors call my asthma 'reactive asthma'. I never had asthma until I had whooping cough at age 48. Usually, the only time I have a problem is when I have an upper respiratory infection. I use Pulmicort Flexhaler daily as maintenance. When I have an upper respiratory infection, I have to double my Pulmicort, add some antihistamines, nasal sprays and use my nebulizer. This usually lasts for about two months and then I can go back to just the Pulmicort Flexhaler. Once in a while, I will come across a perfume or some type of chemical, I use my rescue inhaler and is the end of it. I have had times when I have had to use my rescue inhaler and I don't know why, but that would be the end of it. After reading many of your posts, I know that I am very fortunate. There are times, like right now, when I am not sure if I should use my nebulizer or not. This is the strangest episode I have ever had. It started yesterday. I took my grandson to the doctor. On the way, I started getting some mucus in my chest. I had to keep clearing my throat to get rid of it. Sitting in the waiting room, I was annoying the receptionist. She kept asking me if I wanted water or a hard candy. Last night, the mucus went away, however, my chest felt a bit heavy. When I got up this morning, I felt ok. Then it started again. We went to see my FIL about an hour away. I had the mucus and was clearing my throat all the way. He is in a nursing center. We were there for about three hours. All of my symptoms went away. I felt fine/normal. We started home and I was fine most of the way. Then it started again. Right now, I have the mucus in my chest and I just have to keep clearing my throat and bringing it up from my chest. Early this evening, it seemed to go away again. Now, it is back. This is becoming very frustrating. I just don't get it. Can asthma flare up and go away on it's own? Should I use my nebulizer? I know you probably think I am completely stupid and I feel like I am, but I am honestly not sure. I hesitate to use the Albuterol, because my cardiologist told me to use it only when absolutely necessary because I have three valves that leak. He said Albuterol can affect those leaks. I just don't know. Do I wait until I am really struggling to breathe? I am not struggling or coughing, but it is very annoying to keep clearing my throat and it does begin to make my chest sore. I apologize for this being so long. If anyone has any advice, I will appreciate it very much. Marge
