Hello

My son also had the same problem. It was explained to me that for him it would

sound like being underwater. We did not do the antiboiotics or the tubes.

Instead we have him on Zyrtec daily for allergies. So far he has had no problem

& it has been over a year. Before that I was using Zyrtec on a as I felt he

needed it basis. Seems that even though sometimes I think his allergies aren't

that bad, the fluid is there??? Anyways that is what has worked for us. Does

your son seem to have any allergies? was just over 2 when he started

showing signs of having allergies. Also before jumping to conclusions, have him

checked by a audiologist if the problem persist. They can test more accurately

than the Ped. We are lucky that we live in the same town as a children's

hospital with a great dept. did start babbling a bit more when his ears

cleared up. Now after being in speech therapy for 16 months & on Pro Efa for 8

months there is no stopping his speech. He is understood about 70% of the time.

Back then he had just 3 words!! Also you might have a ENT look into this

before having the Ped. do any draining??? Hope this may be of some help, just a

mom with some of the same problems.

Hi Tammy and everyone!

Just wanted to jump in quick on the fluid in the ears/speech thread.

My nephew attends the same school for the hearing impaired/deaf as my

son Tanner. Again -Tanner has no hearing loss -and many apraxic

children attend schools for the hearing impaired/ deaf in NJ -and do

quite well in the environment -they seem to pick up speech the same

way as their hearing impaired peers in some ways.

Nobody in my family or my sister in law's family is deaf. My nephew

had chronic ear infections when he was little. He had tubes put in a

number of times. Unfortunately -the chronic ear infections affected

his hearing -not enough to be an issue if he was an adult -but as a

young child developing language -it affected his speech. My brother

and sister in law are awsome parents, well educated and intellegent.

Both were extremely aggressive in helping my nephew. My brother was

diagnosed as a child to be " hyperactivity child " the old term for

ADHD. In spite of that or because of that -he was brilliant in

school, and is now one of the youngest partners in one of the largest

maritime law firms in NYC (and there is one person in this group who

works with my brother who has an autistic child -so you could jump in

but don't say the name of the firm -my brother and sister and law are

private people -not like me) My sister in law is a chemist for a

pharmaceutical. In spite of all they did, and the amount of doctor

appointments and treatments they did for , does have a

mild hearing loss in both ears from the chronic ear infections. When

gets an ear infection now -the hearing loss becomes worse of

course -to the point that without his hearing aids -he can't hear you

if you are right next to him at times.

Last night at dinner we all got together and was showing me

how to put the hearing aids in and talking to me about the FM

systems -he's was so cute the way he was explaining to me how to do

it and what's important. He told me he likes to wear the hearing

aids because he can hear better with them. He's doing really well

with speech now fortunately because the hearing loss was caught early

enough, he got the hearing aids -and he's getting all the proper

therapy, etc.

So just as a reminder -if your child has lots of ear infections -

please recheck those hearing tests -and talk to an audiologist

because chronic ear infections, even if they don't affect hearing

loss permanently like it unfortunately did to my cute little nephew

-ear infections could affect your child's ability to hear

temporarily. Don't panic over hearing about my nephew -I know it's

one of the reasons for hearing loss -however it may not be common for

that to happen. Just keep it in mind since hearing is so important

for any child developing language, check with the experts if your

child has frequent ear infections.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!!
