Hello-

To the parents whose kids cover their ears and can't seem to " tune out " noises:

You might want to consider an audiological battery which incudes testing for

" CEntral Auditory Processing Disorder " . Children with CAPD don't have

difficulty hearing per se, but their Central Nervous System has a tough time

processing what they hear, like separating foreground from background (ie your

voice from an air conditioner behind you), distinguishing phonemes (ie ca/t from

ca/p). You might also want to check in with an Occupational Therapist to

identify sensory issues.

Reading you post made me realize that that's exactly what my son is

doing! He's covering his ears to avoid hearing a raised voice!! On

the other hand, he's the loudest child I've ever been around - he

talks loudly, screams alot (in joy) and, when he feels an injustice

has been done to him (you know, like a time out for smacking his

brother lol) he can scream so loudly you can hear him across the

street!!! Not sure what the solution is, but wanted to let you know

he does the same thing. I have to say that I think part of it is not

just the noise, but to isolate himself from the entire issue. I

guess that's a sensory thing, too - to feel naughty. :) Let me know

if you find anything out!

In addition to understanding CAPD, supplementation with magnesium often

helps. My son's hearing sensitivities vanished.
