A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is cut off and the brain cells in that part cannot function. It may be caused by a blocked artery or a blood clot. Unconsciousness may occur 8-10 seconds after the loss of blood supply to the brain. What Happens When a Stroke Occurs?The affected person may have: sudden weakness or numbness, usually on one side of the body sudden severe giddiness, loss of balance and coordination sudden severe headache with no known cause difficulty in speaking, swallowing or understanding loss of concentration and memory loss of control of passing urine or passing motion behavioural changes such as laughing or crying at the wrong time, feeling depressed or showing bad temper.
