Guest guest
How much individual speech therapy will my daughter realistically get from the school district when she turns 3? From what I have read, it seems that 4 days (1/2 hour each day) of INDIVIDUAL speech therapy is what is recommended for kids with Apraxia/Dyspraxia (is that correct?). I just got off the phone with my daughter's EI (the Regional Center in CA) coordinator and I am already dreading the IEP meeting and it won't be until this fall as my daughter turns 3 on December 1. First off she discouraged me from getting an evaluation for Apraxia prior to the IEP meeting. She told me a diagnosis wouldn't matter as they will be basing her therapy on her need not a diagnosis. She said that their team (that being the school district's SLP, etc.) are a lot more qualified to make a diagnosis than anyone I could hire personally. She said that she has never seen even the most severely speech delayed child get more than 2 days (1/2 hour each) of speech therapy (and this is based on their need?)!!! She said for me to expect 4 days of individual speech is unrealistic and that I should trust them to do the best for my daughter!!!! How much individual speech is everyone else getting in the preschool setting? Is there any way to get 4 days of individual speech? I'm lucky if my daughter says a single word in one day (most days nothing but babble)....how can they say that 1 hour of individual speech a week is enough (and that's only if they consider her severe)?? I'm in Orange County, CA..anyone have any experience here? Thanks.
