Guest guest
I would really like to do something about special ed kids getting services if they are homeschooled. My family is friends with the family of one of our US Senators. I've been very tempted to use this connection to see if there is any way to change our special ed laws. Guest guest
Suzi, are you saying that children who are homeschooled are not entitled to services? That's news to me and I'd be furious! What's the difference between homeschooled and private schooling? Guest guest
In Texas there is no difference between homeschooled and private school. Homeschooled kids are considered to be in private school. There is no longer dual enrollment in Texas meaning homeschool and private school children do not receive special services from the school district. I plan to fight them on this but on the grounds that right now my son does not have to be enrolled in school till age 6. We will see how it goes. making my first phone call to district tomorrow. Have my note book ready to write down all the names I talk to and request every thing in writing form them. We will see how it goes. Guest guest
This is wild to me. Here in Oregon kids in private schools have speech services all of the time...lots of people I know have their kids in private schools and receive services. I guess we're lucky. Guest guest
There is a new federal law that was just started either at the end of last year or the first of this year. Both private school and homeschooled children are not entitled to full services. I know in our district it amounts to 10 hours of speech, and that is all no matter what the disability is. In our district, the district is provided complete services for preschool children. I think they are doing this because a regular preschool would be the least restrictive environment, and the school district only has head start and special ed preschool classes. Anyway, this is going on across the country, and districts are changing old policies based on this new regulation. I know there is more information in the IEP_Guide group. There was lots of discussion about his in that group. Anyway, it sucks!!!!!!! We might consider private school if we could get complete OT and speech services. --- In @y..., " Tammy Sowell " <Tammy_S68@m...> wrote: > Suzi, are you saying that children who are homeschooled are not entitled to services? Guest guest
Robyn, I'm not a professional, but what you are describing with your son sounds like a word retrieval problem. My older " typical " son had this. He could not produce specific words on demand. He disguised it very well because he is very bright and had no other problems. But when you were describing the way your son cannot come up with a person's name - that sounded so much like my son. He would often just withdraw and not answer. We thought it was extreme shyness, possibly selective mutism. We finally found an unbelievable speech therapist when he was 8 years old, who also had a degree in psychology, and she was very helpful. Now he is fine (other than being 13 - not an easy age), but I do feel that not diagnosing it early adversely affected his personality - I don't think he would have been such an introvert if we had found and treated the problem earlier. Just my two cents. Barbara
Guest guest
You're right...that really does stink. I guess it hasn't quite reached us yet here in Oregon. I just referred a student of mine for speech a few months ago. (The student is attending a christian private school.) I'd be furious considering how high our property taxes are here with most of it going straight into the schools and education programs.
