Guest guest
Hi guys. I know I have posted about some of this (i.e. the swelling) already this week, and by the way I can see bones in my ankles this evening! I have been following a strict regimen of compression stockings, 20 min of over heart elevation every hour, 3-5 min of walking (easy - have to go to the fridge and feed the darn roids!) every 10-15 min, low salt (Mrs.Dash is pretty good), extra fluids (water). Seems to be working. I am much more comfortable tonight. However, I was hoping to see some progress in my blood sugar levels by now. This is the first time that I have had these side effects while on the salumedrol in the hospital. Then they fairly abruptly took me off and switched me to 80mg/day of prednisone which I am on for one week, 70mg next week, and then 60mg/day until further notice. I have to go to the doctor every day at the moment to measure my kidney levels and my blood pressure and blood sugar levels are too high. Has anyone dealt with this scenario? Are these levels of prednisone going to keep the blood sugar levels high? Normally all my docs are amazed by my low low numbers. My normal BP is 112/50, temp 96.8-97.2, blood sugar around 60. This morning my numbers were BP 135/106, temp 99.4, blood sugar 181. My doc is afraid to reduce the prednisone (especially with the storms all coming through). It seems that every time I get to a dose of under 40mg/day I end up back in the hospital (counted 8 visits since May - total of 42 days (give or take a day) since May 19th. This is getting fairly ridiculous and tedious. So although I thoroughly understand his insistence for the steroids, I wonder if just a little reduction in dosage would help with all these side effects. I want my favorite coffee creamer in my favorite coffee with caffiene (no caffiene right now - swelling). And the caffiene helps with the albuterol shakes. So I really want some! Oh and maybe a lovely heavenly Krispy Kreme What about beer? Will that be hard on my kidneys? I know that it does make a person pee... Thanks for your thoughts. Madeline p.s. (Always leave em laughing - another corny chicken joke from my 9 year old - Why did the chicken cross the road half way? He wanted to lay it on the line! ok one more..... Is chicken soup good for your health? Not if you're the chicken!)
Guest guest
I went through almost the same scenario. It took my body two weeks being off all the meds from the hospital to even out with the blood sugar. Blood pressure is getting back to normal again, too. that was a side effect from the symbicourt, but it seems my body is getting used to that medicine now and I am back to normal levels. Also have a swollen foot, and was put on Triamterene, it worked like a charm, but the side effects where drastic, severe dizziness and my eyesight got bad, after 3 days on those pills. talked to my doc about it and we agreed to take half of the dose. Watermelon juice also helped to draw water from my leg, plus elevating it. It's only a problem when we have very hot days, it helps to have the air conditioner on and to stay inside. I am going to see my pulmo guy this month and will discuss with him future protocol for hospitalizations. C-M
Guest guest
Madeline, I was just talking with my grandmother yesterday and she had been on prednisone for two years for other reasons, (not asthma, even though she does have that) anyways she told me that while she was on the prednisone she too had high sugars and when they took her off of it, her sugars went back to normal. My best advise for you to help control the sugars is to try and follow a low carb diet, which I am sure you are doing and as soon as you can try to move around a bit. My husband has diabetes, so when we eat pasta we eat Dreamfields pasta. (www.dreamfieldfoods.com) and if we make taco's I buy Mission carb balance shells (they are with the rest of the taco stuff, and only 7 carbs per shell!) and for bread I buy friehofers wheat bread because for two slices it is only about 20 carbs. If you want even less carbs buy lite bread, lite bread is only 13 carbs for two slices and is low calorie. Beer has a lot of carbs, but my husband drinks Michelob lite (only 2 carbs), I don't know what if any affects beer have on your kidneys. Eat lots of veggies and protein! That is our diet in a nut shell. If you have ANY questions about blood sugar and diet for controlling it, I will be happy to help. I have learned a lot over the past year since he was diagnosed. I don't know much about the blood pressure, but I am sure that will get better when they do stop the prednisone. Good luck to you Madeline and I hope you continue to get better!!
