,

If I didn't know any better--I would assume we work at the same hospital.

We have one particular doctor who is a repeat offender. I can not even

begin to list all the unprofessional behavior he has displayed over the

years. Although management and administration is aware--little has been

done. Every now and then, they have a meeting.......But nothing has ever

been resolved. (I guess I failed to mention that he is a " bread-winner " for

the hospital) His behavior can be so blatantly deplorable. Now our manager

has us write down any particular event to be placed in a file. Because it

all comes down to profit--I won't be holding my breath on this issue.

And in light of this discussion, particularly about whether anything is ever

done to the poorly-behaving physician.......

I will never forget a doctor when I was doing my OR rotation in nursing

school getting ticked off about something and flinging a scalpel across the

room, right over my shoulder so close that I felt the breeze as it passed.

And *I* wasn't even the source of his anger! Did he get reprimanded? No!

And he's still in practice. Scary, isn't it? If any one of us did that even

once, we'd be sent packing in an instant.

Talk about a double standard!

Where I used to work, we had a couple of docs that would lose it sometime.

Our management supported us and would back us. I also found that a serious,

" Can we talk in private " backed them down.

In my unit, if the doc or anesthesia provider acts up we usually address them head on and try not to get upset in return. We also have a code for disruptive patients or visitors and we use it if a doc gets out of control. Very calming effect to have several male nurses, orderlies, etc., surround you, tends to stop the bull. As a charge nurse I will not allow any doctor, resident or other nurse to harass my team and the docs we work with will back us up. Check your guidelines for verbal and sexual abuse and follow the chain of command. If you get no satisfaction or action you may have a case against your employer as well as the offending doc. Keep a copy of your paper trail and contact and employment attorney.
