Guest guest
melatonin and valerian root are two that I turn to. How is your sleep hygiene? That can make a difference as well. You can also use scented sprays like lavender and rosemary. Another option is having a sleep test done to find exactly where your sleep issues are. Good luck! Guest guest
If it is racing thoughts that are keeping you from going to sleep, I have been taking 1/2 of a 5 mg Xanax (5 mg is the lowest dose available) and it has worked for me for several years. Good luck! Margie > > Help! I am so sleep deprived its not even funny. > My dr.refuses to give me anything to sleep? Guest guest
Sleep..the missing factor. why can't anyone understand that the body can't heal without sleep. why are the dr.'s so caught up in the current 'antidepreesant' and brain drug stuff that the simply won't give us what we need!! I spent 15 years going round and round with my PCPCP. I kept telling her that the only drug that worked was restoril, given to me by my diagnosing dr who stopped practicing. I did all the tricyclics, epilesy drugs and an enless supply of anti depressants. NOTHING worked except restoril. It had been almost 20 years of generally very light, very broken or wide awake sleep. Of course I stayed sick. She (my PCP) finally alloed me to use the restoril. I feel like a new person. So frustrating that the dr's are so caught up in the fad of the day to really do what is necessary to help, especially when it works. To give you some suggestion outside of the medical field. I was able to achieve 2 hours of sleep at a time with a OTC cocktail of 2 good grade valerian root capsules 2 benadryls and 2 tylenols generic. It seems like alot of drugs, but I was desperate and it worked. Every 2 hours, like clockwork, I would retake it. > > Help! Guest guest
For those of you who are open minded enough to consider Complementary Medicine solutions, there are a number of Herbal Teas of various mixtures of herbs to work with. There are tinctures formulated to help with sleep. I have worked with herbs all my life and formulated my own 'Sleep Tea'. Herbs from calming Chamomile to Valerian are available. Hops, Hibiscus Flowers and others. If you don't know an herbalist, don't care to drink a prepared tea, or take a tincture, you can try suggestions such as a pillow filled with Hops flowers and other variations. Just a little research will give many options. Some herbs can be quite strong and some interact with Allopathic Drugs. Always check with your doctor, for what that's worth. I was using an over the counter preparation that really helped until I read that the Melatonin in it was contraindicated for people with Autoimmune diseases. Haven't had a good night's sleep since! Tried a couple of drugs my doctor suggested. They knocked me out for a night's sleep alright, then I felt like a zombie the next day, or was so high that I couldn't drive! No thanks! Guest guest
I would think racing thoughts if I was wide awake when my mind is supposed to be sleeping. I've been reading about ADD and CFIDS. Maybe there is a connection. > > Help! I am so sleep deprived its not even funny. > My dr.refuses to give me anything to sleep? Guest guest
amazing the little tidbits we pick up by reading these posts!! Always wondered why Melatonin affected me so badly. Stupid doctor actually thought I was making it up!! > >To give you some suggestion outside of the medical field. Guest guest
Yes, the key is said to be the " low " dosage of these meds, not the 'regular' dosage for other purposes. Low dosages are good for sleep, and are supposed to be especially good at not allowing you to wake up too early and unable to go back to sleep. Racing thoughts are a big problem for a lot of people and definitely do make it challenging to get to sleep. During the day it seems so much easier to put unpleasant things out of one's thoughts and be distracted by other 'stuff', but at night, one is a captive audience to the thoughts because there is no other distraction. JMO and experience, of course. What I've found works best for me is to not struggle 'against' the racing thoughts. Acknowledge and validate them, then my mind usually feels like it's gotten some of the support it needs. The highest amount of Doxepin I ever take for sleep, when I'm especially stressed or over-stimulated, is 20 mg, the usual is 5 mg. Guest guest
I've hoped in the past to be able to switch over to herbs from a med, but so many of these herbal sleep aids are diuretic, and keep waking me up to go to the bathroom, which I do not need. I don't retain water and am usually 'under'weight, so have to be very careful about that. At least the Doxepin I take does not have this effect, although I understand there is no really completely 'safe' drug out there.
