Guest guest
I cant believe they are giving mothers this as a just incase!! Crazy!! Is this required? I dont recall this with any of my kids birth! My severe son(youngest) was on antibiotics for 2yrs for kidneys! I so hated it knowing what antibiotics was doing to him, flora etc. but we didnt seem to have a choice!! I didnt know enough about the kidney's at time! Im sure my son's gi is a mess due to the long term use of them. And to think it was just for precaution until surgery. I am upset thinking years later, it was a just incase, I would have preferred to just have regular urine test and then if something arose, then do the antibiotics! Probiotics.... I think we all need them!! Guest guest
YES! Probiotics!! I agree we all need to supplement with them!! No. Antibiotics are not required and not in every birth. But, if you test positive for Group B Strep (GBS) during pregnancy (and many women do), OBs will basically insist on giving antibiotics during labor. Also, if the water breaks and the baby isn't delivered within a specified period of time (I think it can vary from doctor to doctor), they will give " preventative " antibiotics. Once the water breaks, the baby's environment is not considered sterile. With all the internal exams that are done in the hospital from the moment you check in, there's a good chance of introducing bacteria into the waters that are still circulating with baby and also of pushing bacteria from the vaginal canal up into the waters as well. Also, if there are any signs of potential for a c-section, they'll start pumping antibiotics. (and, the US has the highest C-section rate of ANY country - something like 20%). I imagine there are other indications for prophylactic antibiotic use as well. Midwives don't do much in terms of internal exams during the entire pregnancy and even during labor (esp if the water breaks). Obstetricians are up there every 30 minutes (at least that's how it seemed for my first born's hospital birth). Unfortunately, in our rather law suit-prone society, obstetrics has become a practice of " preventing disasters " from happening (no matter how rare a potential problem, they're going to treat everyone as if the birth is a disaster waiting to happen and do all kinds of prohylaxis). I think obstetricians pay the most for their malpractice insurance and have the highest risk for being sued. No wonder they've had to take this stance, but I think that many of the prophylactic measures (esp. the antibiotic use) are going to be shown one day to be more detrimental overall than helpful. > > > > > > > > HI, > > > > > > > > I have not been with the group for some time now but I still > read > > > posts and > > > > wanted to share my experiences with regard to bowel movements.
