Guest guest
At the risk of sounding like a broken record....this seems to be the topic lately....any chance you have GERD? My son who has cerebral palsy {he is considered a quadraplegic} had a never ending and annoying cough for a very long time. It was not until we got him on Claritin D {I get the walgreens generic} and nexium that the cough cleared up. It's worth exploring. Post nasal drip is a real problem too. I get that and it can cause me to cough a long time. For my daughter we used nasonex and it cleared her up really well. She did try some of the others but the nasonex seemed to be the least irritating to her throat. Good luck! Guest guest
I have cough variant asthma, and I have been in your shoes and taken much prednisone in the past. But this can be treated so you have better quality of life. Sinus problems, allergies, and GERD can all be making the asthma worse. You need to find an asthma specialist who can examine you to look for all the possible hidden contributing causes and find the right medicines for your asthma. In my experience, family doctors do not have the experience to treat this succesfully. You need someone very experienced with asthma, like a pulmonologist or an allergist who mainly treats asthma. But with the right combo of medications, you can feel much much better and reduce that nasty prednisone usage. It took me finding the right doctor and accepting the fact that I needed quite a bit of daily medication, but my quality of life is so much better and I do not have the exhausting feelings from coughing all the time. Are you on daily medication, such as inhaled steroids? Have you been given antibiotics for sinus infection? Sometimes it takes a lengthy course to get rid of sinus infections. You may also need some nasal steroids or decongestants to improve drainage to get rid of sinus infection. And doing a saline nasal rinse daily or more often can help too. And you might think whether you have any signs of reflux, subtle or otherwise that could be washing stomach acid up into your lungs and sinuses. And allergies can contribute, even if they are not awful. It sounds like you need to find a good doctor, who can help you evaluate the best way to get your asthma treated better. There a quite a few people here who cough with their asthma, who may have insight as well. But have hope-it can get a lot better. Good luck, > > I have been coughing for quite sometime now, i say since november, the > same time i got diagnosed with asthma, and the only relief i get is > when i am on a course of prednisone which is another thing that > concerns me. > > I went to an allergy specialist and didnt really find anything that i > am extremely allergic to, i had a ct scan of my sinuses and results > show that i have inflammed sinuses, which my doctor said could very > well be whats causing the cough. > > is there anyone here who have experienced/experiencing a cough that > just wont go away? Guest guest
Do you take daily meds for your asthma? Chronic cough is a symptom of uncontrolled asthma, and if you do take preventive meds you may not have to take the prednisone so often. Also, my Gastro dr. told me that some people only have a cough as a symptom of reflux, so that is something else to consider. > > I have been coughing for quite sometime now, i say since november, the > same time i got diagnosed with asthma, and the only relief i get is > when i am on a course of prednisone which is another thing that > concerns me. Guest guest
I have a semi-chronic cough and have no GERD or reflux of any kind. I tend to cough and not wheeze. It is very rare for me to wheeze. I notice that my cough is in direct correlation to my asthma. When I am coughing I have to use my nebulizer and other meds much more. The steroids will control my cough as well. Also, I don't have any diagnosed allergies after much testing. I agree with the earlier post, you really should be seeing an asthma specialist. It is more than possible that with a change of controller medications (either type or dose), that you can get some relief from this. I am on Symbicort. I started off on Advair and after two months switched when I had no relief. The Symbicort is not stopping my severe asthma symptoms, but it does seem to somewhat help control the cough. Guest guest
Hi I have had a cough since I first got asthma after a major infection in 1993. It has never fully gone away. Guest guest
Yeah that's the way with me. I very rarely wheeze. Guest guest
I too have cough variant asthma. I almost never wheeze but my cough has caused me to briefly black out on 5 occasions. Like some of the previous posters, I developed asthma following a respiratory infection. It is very difficult to control. I agree that you should see a specialist. I have been seeing a pulmonologist and an asthma specialist. They have me on symbicort, zyflo cr, protonix, flonase, zyrtec, and ,of course, prednisone and albuterol (inhaler and nebulized) as needed. The asthma specialist wanted me to take lidocaine in my nebulizer 4 times a day to suppress the coughing urge but my insurance wouldn't cover it. MY cough is still not what I would say was under control but it is much better. Good luck, it can be a rough road. > > Hi I have had a cough since I first got asthma after a major infection in > 1993.
