Dear ...I asked a similar question a couple of weeks back. I am prone to

rare side effects to the point that one round of Prednesone a while back cost me

a week long psychotic episode and left me on Zoloft for a year. So now I am very

careful when starting a new drug. Enbrel seems to give me mild vertigo and

disorientation that tapers off in a day or two. I am nauseated immediately

after the injection. I'm not sure, however, what roll anxiety plays in this.

I'm an extremely anxious, high strung, musician. It seems a lot of PA sufferers

are anxious which makes me wonder about the thyroid disorders everyone seems to

be posting about. I've been borderline hyperthyroid most of my life. I any

event, I actually called the hot line and spoke to a nurse and then a staff

pharmacologist. They said there are only reports of dizziness. Dizziness seems

an awfully subjective term open to many related symptoms. These effects seem to

be lessening the more I take the drug. The improvement and potential for

improvement is so great I am just riding it out and making an effort to appear

normal. Of course I'm used to that. Also taking Klonopin twice a day seems to

help with the whole experience. Ronnie E.

Re: Enbrel & nausea. A few days after my fourth injection I started feeling

very nauseous along with headaches and very large injection site

reactions.all at once at all four sites. I stopped for two weeks and when I

started back again I did not experience any headaches or nausea. I still get

the ISR but not as bad. I will let you know how things progress as I just

gave myself the fourth injection today after starting back again.Peggy from

upstate NY.

You must be one of the lucky:( few to keep getting reactions to the

injection sites. The reaction at the forth or fifth injection where

all the injection sites react is fairly common. I've stopped

injecting while being treated for ear infections and restarted with

no reactions. Hope it gets better for you...PatB

Hi everyone - I've been on enbrel for about 4 weeks now and seem to be

getting worse. I've heard such great success stories with Enbrel, but has

anyone had it NOT work for them??

Hope you are all painfree today,

Don't be discouraged. I have been on Enbrel for about 5 weeks and I am just now

beginning to improve. My doctor said that it can take up to 6 weeks to notice

improvement (I always seem to fall in the later category). My swelling and

redness has gone down but I am still in pain (although it appears to be less).

I am not sure if that is due to the Enbrel or the fact that my Dr. increased my

prednisone. I have noticed my morning stiffness has decreased but now I am

finding that I am in more pain at night. Go figure. I guess we have to be

patient. I wouldn't give up on it quite yet. Your progress may be gradual.

Are you taking anything else besides Enbrel? My doc made it sound like once I

started Enbrel I could stop all other drugs. Not true. I guess you have to

find the right combination of drugs that will work for you. Hang in there. I

hope you get to feeling better.

I<> Enbrel question>

Hi ,

My success with enbrel was slow starting but at the 6 month point, I am about

75% better than at the starting point. I weaned down and finally stopped the

mtx 3 months ago, and have had a much better energy level. Only problem is

that my P is suddenly worsening, which my Dermatologist was puzzled by until

she caught that I started taking atenalol (a beta blocker) for hypertension

about 10 months ago and she said that beta blockers are notorious for making

P worse. She said that some people can take it if they are on mtx, once of it

, it usually flares badly------ so...... numerous prescriptions later and a

lot co-pay poorer, I need to find a new antihypertensive that works.

Hopefully that will get the P back under control.

Good luck--- I really hope the enbrel starts to kick in and work for you!

Hang in there.

I was on Enbrel 3 months and the only relief I got was in my hands and

fingers.Sadly, my doc took me off of it. He said the danger wasn't worth the

little results I got. I think I'm sorry he did that as my hands are now

worse than ever!

- only Vioxx. I had been on prednisone last year, but been off for

some time now. I just stopped taking some supplements like flaxseed oil and

evening primrose oil thinking they didn't help, but maybe I should start them

again. Also taking Vit. E and glucosamine.

- I wasn't feeling any improvement until we increased my prednisone again.

I am beginning to think that the prednisone is having more effect on my body

than the Enbrel. I do have a bit more energy now. Your lucky you are off the

prednisone. If I ever get off it I am never going back on it again. I

desperately want to get off the prednisone but every time I try to wean myself

off it I begin to flare. Saturday I overslept and awoke at 11:00. I was in so

much pain because I was late taking my prednisone. I am beginning to think I am

going to be stuck on this stuff for the rest of my life. I feel like some

junkie - my body is physically addicted to the prednisone. My parents are

upset with me because they really want me off the prednisone too. My mother

tells me that I have to get used to the pain. She is 53 and has a slipped disc

in her spine. She thinks she can relate, and maybe she can but I don't want to

live the rest of my life in pain. I don't think it is something I can ever get

used to. The worst thing is my GP keeps telling me to get off it too but these

rheumatologists prescribe it like candy. You have one doctor telling you it is

bad and another telling you it is ok and you are like - who do I believe?

AGHHH!!!

Sorry I kinda went off there. You may want to talk to your doctor about

changing your anti-inflammatory. Was the Vioxx helping any before you started

the Enbrel? I haven't tried many of the herbs (I hate taking pills and I don't

want to take anymore than I already have too). I tried taking the glucosamine

chondrotin too but I never noticed any difference.

Wishing everyone a pain free day,

- it's a VERY slow process - I went from 10 mg. twice a day, to 10

once and 5 once, then 5 twice a day, down to 5 once and 2.5 once - etc. etc.

- it took at least 6-8 months to get off of it totally. Be patient and keep

trying little by little - you can't just cut down by more than 2.5 a day and

not feel it.

As for your mom thinking she can relate - she can't. I know it's hard to

explain, but with PA, you can be in so MUCH pain one minute and relatively ok

the next - it's a weird disease and I don't think anyone who doesn't have it

can truly relate to the pain of it.

Well, best of luck in getting off the pred. It is sometimes our only

salvation, but it has such nasty side effects in both the short and long term.

Take care,

- It is amazing how Doctors can misguide you. I was told that 5mg

prednisone was a small enough dose that I could just quit taking it. When I was

trying to wean myself off I cut the pills in half and took 2.5mg a day. That is

when I started having problems. I was taking 15mg before and each time I cut

down by 5mg and was ok. I guess at the lower dose my body starts to miss it.

- it also comes in 2.5 strength so you don't have to cut the pills.

Some pills shouldn't be cut - I don't know if pred. is one or not.

Re: Weaning off predisone.- I had been on 7.5 mgs for a little over a year.

I had started on Enbrel & I felt it was time to cut back on my prednisone.

The doctor advised me to cut back by one half mg every three weeks. That

would mean I would take 7.0 mgs for three weeks followed by 6.5 mgs for the

next three weeks, then 6.0 for three weeks , etc. After I was on 5mgs for

three weeks I asked if I could alternate 10 mgs one day and 0 mgs the next

day. The Rd said that would be fine as that is how it is recommended that

prednisone be taken. So far I am not having any problems that I am aware of.

When I had tried to wean myself off prednisone before I was on Enbrel I

would wind up with a newly affected joint each time I tried to lower the

dosage. I still keep taking extra calcium because taking pred. does

something to your calcium absorption. Good Luck. Peggy B.

Does anyone know if there are any effects that Enbrel would have on a

baby still in Uterero? The man being the one on Enbrel. Haven't been

to the Enbrel site yet to check it out. This is the first place I

stopped.

Thanks

Hi ,

I don't remember if you said in the past however, can you tell me how long

the Enbrel took to help you with the PA.
