Guest guest
Hi Lynn - it's great the Synthroid seems to be working for you. The weight thing varies for all of us--some hypo people struggle greatly with it and some not at all--so there's no saying if and when the Synthroid will help with that, unfortunately. Combining your Synthroid with an exercise and especially muscle-building regimen is probably the best way to try to address that sluggish metabolism, but some people find that even when their thyroids are regulated, they haven't dropped the weight they wanted--just a warning, don't be discouraged, just give it time and your best try and see what works for you. > > I have been diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroiditis. Guest guest
Hello Lynncrr, I am in similar boat to you. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's when my baby was 6 months old. My TSH was over 200 (yes, they were surprised I wasn't in a coma with levels that high), and my antibodies well over 1,000 as well. I had been breastfeeding and lost ALL my pregnancy weight by the time my baby was 4 months old. I was 124 pounds once again and was soooo happy. Had all the energy in the world. Then I crashed, got the flu and just never recovered from it. Got more and more tired each day, then my arms started going numb, and I started gaining weight like crazy...about 10 pounds over 2 weeks. I fell a few times, started falling asleep driving to work, etc. Really crazy stuff...and I thought it was just part of being a new Mom and going back to work full time, dealing with my baby's hip surgeries for a birth defect, etc. Lo and behold it was Hashimoto's. I've been on levoxyl 112 mg since then and it has helped alot. More energy, etc. but just like you, it has NOT helped get any of the weight off at all. I stopped breastfeeding when I was diagnosed (I passed out once when breastfeeding my baby at 7 months old and that is what clinched it for me), so I don't know if the inability to lose the weight has to do with the fact that I stopped breastfeeding so I'm no longer using those calories. Because it's winter I've also been doing less walking and exercise, so that could be it too. I have been eating healthier and smaller portions, no pre-packaged dinners, etc. and only drinking water and an occasional cup of tea as a treat but no coffee, soda, etc. Only eating out maybe once a week as a splurge. But I still haven't lost any weight. Again, I think it might be because of winter, low exercise level on my part and no longer breastfeeding. Good luck and if you find a way to lose the weight, let me know!!! Also, congrats on your baby! As a new mother myself, I know it's been hard dealing with Hashimoto's while raising a baby, working full time, etc. So just remember how strong you are for just doing what you are doing! Guest guest
Hi To All that are Battling Weight: I have posted here before that I gained 20 lbs. 2 yrs. ago when first diagnosed with Hashi's. The weight came on me so fast I was overwhelmed. I kept telling people, I am not eating or drinking more and I am exercising, so I didn't know what is going on. Another disturbing symptom was a very swollen face. I have always had a round face, but since the weight gain, it looks like someone put a needle in me and pumped up my face with air. I found fat in places I didn't think fat would go. I have taken advice from people on this website, particularly noting what Amy writes about how we are starving our bodies. I just couldn't believe how everything I ate and drank was allowing me to maintain my weight my whole life up until 2 yrs. ago. So at the age of 47, I am having to change everything including my way of thinking. Now when I go to the grocery store, I buy more fresh fruits and veggies. I had just started to get on the Whole Grain band wagon, when I read on this website that might not be such a good idea because of the gluten. My mom raised us to eat pretty much what we wanted in moderation. I have never been a big fruit eater, but am starting to add more to my diet. I am also drinking a lot more water. I have been gradually changing my diet and more importantly my way of thinking. I have stopped saying to myself, but I just want my old life back, which was both feeling and looking better. With prayer, this website, other informative articles in both print and on t.v., I am slowly changing. I cannot say that I have lost weight yet, but it seems like I have stopped gaining for the time being. I don't want to sound negative, but it has been hard these past 2 yrs. not only bc of the above, but bc I went through menopause the same time I was diagnosed with Hashi's. So needless to say my body was out of whack for more than one reason. I still feel embarassed when I run into someone that I haven't seen in a few yrs. and they look at me like they don't know me anymore. That is how different I look. Being that I was a Health and Phys. Ed. teacher, I am even more embarassed. Sorry for going on and on, but some days it is really hard to handle. And I know looks aren't everything, but when people I have known for years aren't recognizing me, it is hard to accept. I really value this support group bc everyone shares what works for them and people don't seem judgmental. I know that I have to come to grips with the here and now and continue to search for what I need to do to get back a healthy body, which is the most important thing. I have changed doctors and am trying to work with both my Prim. Care Phys. and a holistic doctor on strategies, medicine and supplements. I wish you the best in finding what works for you. Thanks for listening, Helena & Kennedy wrote: Hello Lynncrr,I am in similar boat to you. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's when my baby was 6 months old.
