Guest guest
Does anyone know why doctors switched from the DTP to the DTaP vaccine? I'm curious because I discovered that my constipated child (age 4) received the DTP vaccine, even though DTaP was widely available at the time (my 9-year-old had DTaP had her well baby visits). I'm wondering if the doctor just had some old DTP lying around, or what...I can't ask her, as that doctor is now retired (she had her own practice and was the only doctor in it). I gather there are problems with both versions of this vaccine, but that DTP is worse for some reason? Bonnie

Guest guest
Bonnie -- You are on to something. I vaguely remember that the nurse was giving the shot to my son as she said something like " we can't get the other version of this now, so this is older stock with a different preservative " No -- no disclosure on thimerosal. That was fall of 2002. > > Does anyone know why doctors switched from the DTP to the DTaP vaccine? Guest guest
A greater number of adverse events were observed when using DTP as compared with DTaP (DTaP contains " acellular " pertussis component as opposed to cellular pertussis component in DTP). In Japan, they switched to DTaP in 1981 because it was so clear that it was much safer and because of public outcry. In the US, the FDA did not even approve DTaP until 1996. The pharma companies knew it was safer but it was more expensive to make acellular pertussis for DTaP. Did any of your children get Rotashield vaccine (I believe only out for one year 1998-1999 before they realized how deadly it was.) That one definitely caused a lot of GI problems and death before it got pulled. Just wonder if any of the constipated kids here happen to be old enough to have gotten that one before it was taken off the market?.... > > > > Does anyone know why doctors switched from the DTP to the DTaP > vaccine? Guest guest
I should add that I think the adverse events were related specifically to the pertussis component (cellular versus acellular) rather than any of the preservatives or additives..... > > > > Does anyone know why doctors switched from the DTP to the DTaP > vaccine?
