What are Heberden's nodes?

Dear , Thank you for the information on

Heberden's and excess platelets. These nodules have

exacerbated the weakness in my fingers and are

downright unattractive. What concerned me when I read

that my platelet count was elevated was the fact that

my father and my uncle died of the same kind of

leukemia. My Dad was only 49. Since I grew up in the

cancer belt (SW Louisiana) and swam where the plants

dumped toxins, I am concerned about the number of my

school mates that have died of rare cancers. I will

asked the rheumy to investigate further when I see him

in 3 weeks.

Thank you! Iris

Hello, Iris! We've missed your posts. Glad to see you are back. Seems

like many people are experiencing strange mail problems.

I'm always happy to send along links that might help. You're welcome!

I can understand your concern about elevated platelets given your family

history and possible environmental exposure, but I hope it was

reassuring to see that thrombocytosis can occur for a variety of

reasons, most of them fairly benign. That's very sad about your father

and uncle. I'm sorry. I would ask your doctor about it when you see him

next.

As for those damn Heberden's nodes, here I am at 43 and I believe I have

one starting on my right pinky. I agree that they are not pretty! The

other day I was looking very carefully at my 94-year-old grandmother's

hands. They are wonderful. She did so many incredible things with those

hands - hard labor as well as fine work - but they look beautiful. I

don't think I've got those genes.
