*South Wales Echo Letters*.

There are two sorts of article doing the rounds of newspapers in the UK,

appearing to offer people with M.E. (*Myalgic Encephalomyelitis*), if not a

miraculously quick cure, at least a great degree of recovery which, in

reality, offer false hope and, in truth, do not have the interests of M.E.

sufferers at the Number 1 position on their list of motives:

One type goes like this: A person claiming to have had M.E. for several

years and having tried everything, without success, hears from a friend, or

just by chance, about a new treatment, which is achieving great success.

They are sceptical but, after years of languishing ill, feel they have

nothing to lose. They try it and are both surprised and delighted when it

works for them too. Now, they have trained to offer the same for others.

Usually, their contact details follow.

The other type, like this one (*Dramatic turnaround sets Jordan Selig on the

road to stardom, South Wales Echo, 23 June 2008*) is seeking sponsorship for

someone looking for a career break; in this case, it is in entertainment. We

have seen a plea for financial support for a poker player.

What the recommended treatments have in common is that they are

controversial; have not been independently, scientifically, tested but rely

on subjective testimonials; are not approved by any orthodox medical

organisation and are practised by people with diverse and vague

qualifications, of no universally recognised standards. It can be a

expensive business. Each session may cost as much per hour as some people

with M.E., on benefits, have to live on for a week and can leave people in

debt - and still ill.

There are usually more plausible explanations for any improvement - such as

resting, home help, or tutorial assistance for schoolchildren and pacing -

than the effect of having had the treatment which are ignored or rejected by

the inventors or advocates of these radical alternative therapies. We also

never hear of people for whom these treatments did not work, perhaps because

they remain too ill to speak out.

Sadly, the headlines most often seem to suggest a recovery which is rarely

realised in the vast majority of cases.

Yours sincerely
