Guest guest
28 lbs. Now I may get the days a bit off but you will get the jest: Wed morn I tried 1 OP. It didn't work and dd had one of the most miserable days she has had in a while. That night I gave her two. It started working a while later. Thur night I gave her 2 more. It was half the adult starter dose. Susie ~ > > > > Last time I gave Hannah Oxy Powder was Thur night (I think!). She has > > been pottying ever since!!!! Guest guest
Given her weight, I would back down to at least 1 cap or preferably a half-capsule and see how she does with that. The type of magnesium that is in oxypowder is not one that is readily 'absorbed' or utilized well by the body, which means that it is less likely to cause magnesium overload as some of the other forms of magnesium are, BUT, I still always caution people to go conservative with magnesium... try to find the lowest possible dose that is effective because too much magnesium isn't good for the body. I used to be on boards where they would say, Give as much magnesium as you can, to get to the point of very loose stools, and it would indicate that everyone would get diarrhea with magnesium at some point...well, that's just not good advice... my husband can have diarrhea with a low/normal dose of magnesium and I could give my dd the same dose as him, and there would be NO change in her stools... if I had tried to keep going with magnesium to the point of loose stools/diarrhea, it would be a lot of magnesium. Now, with that said, I will say that when I had asked my child's doctor if X mg's of magnesium would be OK per day, they came back with an absolute Yes...they said she could have up to XX mg's of magnesium per day and she'd still be fine! So by that, I mean that maybe sometimes I am a little too conservative! :-) But personally given the description of her stool, I'd say definitely try just one capsule, and see what you can establish for maintenance..maybe a half capsule per day might work just fine for her. I think what you are seeing with the loads and loads of sludge are things getting cleaned out... in time I would expect that you would not see so much quantity coming through. What you want though are firm logs that are easy to pass--that's when you'll know that you found a good amount for her. > > Last time I gave Hannah Oxy Powder was Thur night (I think!). Guest guest
Just to add a little more info -- you may also be seeing the effect of the magnesium breaking up the calcium oxalate crystals -- which produces oxalic acid which in turn can cause loose (acidic) stools. I agree -- back off on magnesium a little. I got agressive with my son and topped out at 1200mg per day when he was 48 pounds. After a couple weeks at that level I was able to back down. Since oxypowder is about 500mg of magnesium per capsule, I you will probably be able to be at one per day and then back off to one every other day in a few weeks. But I'm just guessing based upon my experience with my son. Also, if it is acidic stools, make sure you change her diapers often. Baking soda dissolved in warm water wash clothes are the best for cleanup IMO. > > > > Last time I gave Hannah Oxy Powder was Thur night (I think!). She has > > been pottying ever since!!!! Guest guest
Well, see one cap did not work. It may now though. I will back down should I have to start her back on it. It has been over 3 days since I have given her any. Another thought...my family has a history of magnesium diff and we have to take more than the average. My dad died of heart disease and I am sure this played a role. My son and I both suffer from thyroid probs that have to be treated with mag. We can realy tell a diff. So what I am wondering is if Hannah doesn't have to have more than some folks. That being said...I know you can od on mag. Too much mag can cause heart damage (among other things) as easily as too little. Thanks for your post! Susie ~ > > > > Last time I gave Hannah Oxy Powder was Thur night (I think!). Guest guest
Yes, I have noticed that when I have had to up the MOM at times, her movements would be pretty acidic!! I would change her dipe as soon as she dirtied it and use creams and she would still have a blistered hieny. It is getting red now. But on top of that the poor thing went and played in the sand and her dipe and cover were loose and got a diaper full of sand!! Yikes!! Guest guest
Susie,My experience has been that with these kids with slow moving bowels, what happens on one day is not the result of what you did that day--it's coming from what you did 3-10 days earlier. We often see results as long as a week after giving something to loosen stools...but eventually it tapers off unless we keep giving whatever it was. Your Oxypowder experience is really encouraging. I'm wondering if we should try it--the magnesium WaterOz is softening things up, but not improving her frequency at all. For those who have been worried about safety of Oxypowder (especially Marg), I should note that I *did* ask our doctor about it, he had indeed heard of it, and his response was, " Well, Oxypowder is okay, but it might be a little harsh for a child. " He's very conservative about magnesium and kids, but thought it would be something we could safely try if other options didn't work. Which, at this point, it seems as though they aren't... Bonnie Well, see one cap did not work. It may now though. I will back down should I have to start her back on it. It has been over 3 days since I have given her any. Guest guest
Bonnie, that makes perfect since! I am now seeing tapering. Back to giving more OP. I'll stick with one cap for now.
