Guest guest
Just wanted to remind everyone that a sulfite intolerance can cause asthma symptoms. And can develop at any point in time in your life. Symptoms can be typical asthma symptoms or can also include things like hives, stomach upset, and headaches. Reactions can be immediate to hours later. But asthma like wheezing and distress is the gold standard sulfite intolerance reaction. Given the huge amount of sulfites in our food and environment it's very tough to avoid. I've often wondered how many people diagnosed with asthma have a sulfite intolerance and do not know it. There is a yahoo group for sulfite intolerant people (sulfitesnomore). Basically one has to avoid any product with an ingredient that has sulfite in the name, naturally occurring sulfites (garlic, onion, collards, eggs, etc.), plus any product that has corn or corn derivatives (there are many!). Corn is typically wet-milled in a sulfite solution before becoming one of those derivatives. Pretty much every ingredient on food and drug labels that's not readily apparent as a plant, animal, or fish comes from corn. And some folks are sensitive to what's in the air, household cleaners, toothpaste, soaps, and shampoos. Just a thought as some of you may have this, not know it, and wonder why your asthma is going nuts so often. It might be worth cleaning up your diet for a few weeks to see if there is any difference. Be forewarned, it's a very tough diet, especially in the US, and every sulfite intolerant person is a bit different in what and how much they need to avoid.
