Sue,

Rheumatoid nodules are a very prominent feature of RA. They are generally

painless lumps that you can feel under your skin. I have many of them in

my ankles. I had them injected with cortisone many times, but finally had

them removed. I couldn¹t wear shoes because they were big and rubbed when I

put shoes on. About a year after I had them removed, they came back. They

aren¹t as big, and so far they aren¹t interfering with wearing shoes, so I¹m

not doing anything with them. Some doctors think the nodules are lumps of

inflammations around small blood vessels. They usually don¹t cause

problems, but may look bad. Ganglion cysts are fluid filled and can arise

from ligaments or tendon sheaths when they are irritated or inflamed. If

they are painful, the fluid can be removed with a needle.

I think most of us in this group have nodules and/or cysts. RA truly is a

dastardly disease.

Here¹s some info on nodules:

Kathy,

I told my rheumy that my knees looked like they'd been chewed by rats. He

examined them and said they looked fine. I don't know whose knees he was

comparing them to, because each knee has a cluster of little knots. Shaving

my legs has become dangerous.

Even before I got the knots, it had become impossible for me to get down on

my hands and knees. Makes it awfully hard to clean out from under the bed,

doesn't it?

It's nice to be able to discuss this with someone who understands. Thanks.

a, How did you get to be so knowledgeable about RA? You and always

manage to answer my questions. Thank you so much.

At one site on ganglion cysts, it said that you could hit a cyst hard with a

book and break it. Don't think I'll be following that advice.

Sue,

I just read a lot. I guess having this disease for over 25 years has taught

me a lot. I also learn a lot from reading about everyone¹s experiences.

At least 10 years pre RA, I had a ganglion cyst appear on the back of my

hand. It started out a soft squishy lump that hurt like crazy any time I

held anything in my hand. I could move it around. The doctor wrapped my

hand in an ace bandage and it hardened. It¹s still there to this day, but

it¹s a fixed hard lump. Things like this and the memory of early joint pain

makes me wonder if I had RA long before it was diagnosed. I don¹t think

I¹ll be breaking mine either!

Yes, Kathy, you're MIL is right. Ganglion cysts are also referred to as

" Bible cysts " since smashing them with a Bible or another large book was

an old-time remedy. I don't recommend it! One pathologist on the Web

that I secretly have a crush on said that Bible therapy is just about as

effective as surgery for ganglion cysts though, LOL!

I may have one on the top of my wrist, but I'm not sure. You can't

really notice it unless I drop my hand down. I had one doctor say, " Wow!

That just pops right out there! " That's about as scientific as he got.

Sigh,

Do you have the link for this?

Since my ganglion cyst and rheumatoid nodules on my elbows appeared about

the same time, I tend to think that my nodules probably came from the RA and

not from mtx.

I say they appeared about the same time. At least I noticed them at about

the same time. I wonder how long they'd been there before I actually became

aware of them. Later, I got the bumps on top of my hands, which I tend to

think are nodules, but may be yet a third kind of knotbumplump.

Hi,

I have had Ganglion cysts on the top of my foot where it is very painful to

wear shoes. I went to an Orthopedic Surgeon and all he did was take his

thumbs, press down on it and it was gone. He said I could do the same thing.

In the olden days they were called Bible cysts as to get rid of them, they

would whack them with the Bible. Same idea, I guess. Could someone press

down on it for you? Evidently, and I really haven't the slightest idea, they

are just filled with fluid and the fluid leaks out when they are

squeezed?????

If this sounds too primitive to you I suggest you go to your doctor. My

Rheumatologist tried aspirating it with no success so maybe they aren't

filled with fluid after all.

I know that if I get another one I shall go to a doctor as I haven't the

stomach to squeeze it myself..... :o(

Let me know what you decide on doing.......:o)

xxoo

I was trying to avoid going to the doc since he's 2 1/2 hours away but it is

impeding the mobility of my wrist and I think I might have to take the

trip...that or the book thing (LOL)

No, no,no more talk of whacking with a book !!! As our friend said,

go and have it checked. Sometimes these are not cycsts but

calcification nodules from our arthritis, I think. Kathleen, where

are you? No more talking of whacking anything on our bodies please.

The damage could be serious. Thanks Melt
