Hi Dana,

sorry to hear about that - suppositories are not fun for anyone (child

or parent!). It could be that just the insertion of the suppository

was enough to stimulate movement of her bowels and she did not need

the suppository to dissolve/melt. Have you tried Fleet BabyLax - it's

a liquid glycerin suppository (*NOT* the Fleet enema)?

Have you tried palpating her lower abdomen to see if you can feel if

she is still impacted? I can feel the stool inside DS's lower abdomen

very easily when he's either impacted or withholding a hard stool.

Usually down near his pelvic bone and I know immediately I've found

the stool because he can feel it, too, when I gently press on it.

(His reaction is mostly frustration because I think when I palpate it,

it increases his " urge " and he gets nervous about it.)

For us, I give him a Senna + stool softener tablet (he

swallows tablets/pills now, thank goodness!! makes life sooo much

easier!!). I do not like senna (or chemical stool softener) for

routine use, but this seems to really move the firm stools out. (we

have had to go with suppository on a few occasions, though...)

As an aside, our pediatrician actually first recommended using senna

regularly to keep him going, so I know she believed it to be o.k. for

routine use. We did use it daily for a brief while, but as I read

more about it I decided to go with magnesium for " maintenance "

instead. But, for the occasional help through a hard stool/impaction

spell, for us the senna plus softener seems to work pretty well.

Hang in there!

hth!

best,

think that and/or the senna will clear it out as well? i know she must have a huge obstruction in there - straining and strainign with nothing to show for it. starting to break my heart. we (lilah and me) talked abuot the suppositories adn how it will help ehr get it out and she seemed on board with the getting it out part....

For children, ex-lax are recommended by pharmacist's as well, they are chocolate and easy for little ones to have to take, most, don't recommend suppositories, they scar there little souls

YAY! had to share - she just made a VERY BIG poop pn her own - didn't even get the chance to give her the senna or ex-lax. the poop was so significant, that it knocked her out and she is napping now.
