Guest guest
! These are horrific times for the consumer. compared to cardiac, organ transplant, brain, spinal fusion, and some plastic surgery post-burn patients ect ect . the cost of surgery for joint replacement averages about $4000-$6000 Iv had 4 spinal fusion's at the cost of 30,000 each, there is a difference and now that the Dr. are disgruntled and we know how the HMO's treat their people, is a perfect time to get an arthritic advocacy group started. It has to start somewhere . Clinton is trying to rebuild healthcare and in this gray area it is time to step to the plate and demonstrate the expertise to save money for the Fed and State Programs. Why is it we need to hire people to speak for us. the collective knowledge of this group far surpasses anything that out there today. Yet we continue to hire people to do our bidding . It is time for us as a group to pool resources and take care of our own as we know more about this illness than the CEO in Jamaica ,who makes decisions concerning our health care . I have had over 250 injections of prednisone, aristocort ,hydrocortisone, many strong cortisone's like ATCH. I do not have your symptoms nor your metabolism I cannot recommend anything as I am not a MD. I will just say that in case it took a considerable amount until undesirable effects showed up . Im quit convinced that if I had only been given 1 -6 shots a year in different joints I would be just fine. Your MD knows best most of them will only give you 1-3 shots in the same joint per year as that is the customary procedure. Ask your Doc about limits and if he/she feels that you are safe to be injected I would do it as like ;you say , Iv had shots that never needed repeating Good luck God bless Root
Guest guest
My RD sent me to a foot surgeon to check out the forefoot pain I've been having for a while. It doesn't really seem to respond to anything I've taken orally. Now my feet are developing bunions and starting to look weird. The podiatrist wants to try orthotics and cortisone injections and stave off surgery as long as possible. There is joint narrowing, cysts, and structural changes, but not bad enough for surgery yet. He gave me a cortisone injection 2 weeks ago in my big toe and it did work. I can actually bend my big toe for the first time in months. Today, he wanted to give me another in my third metatarsal joint and I declined. They work, but the initial pain just sends me through the roof!!!!! I have cysts in the bones of the last metatarsal of both feet, pain in the third metatarsals of both feet, and ankle pain in both ankles. I can't imagine having all these injections all the time! Not to mention my finger that won't bend and the arthritic changes in my neck (you know the routine <wink>). I just don't see cortisone injections as being anything more than a band-aid. On the flip side, I'd like very much to get off the oral pred I've been taking for years. Sigh...what to do, what to do. Anyone have any info on cortisone injections? I did an Internet search, but most of what came up were posts of running injuries. I don't see my RD until the 14th, and the podiatrist wants me back in a month to inject something somewhere! It's also starting to add up to lots of $$ as United just increased my copays. Thanks for listening! Blessings, R (FL)
Guest guest
Hi Ali:     Yes, I have had them in both knee's, back, and shoulders, and fingers. It does take a few days to kick in. It all depends on the person getting the shot. Mine have lasted between 3-6 months. If you do not have relief within 2 weeks, I would go back to your Dr. and have another one. Sometimes it can take 2 shots to really get relief. Hope your shot does work well for you.  Hugs,  Barbara From: ali3787 <ali3787@...> Subject: [ ] CORTISONE INJECTIONS Date: Wednesday, January 13, 2010, 12:58 PM  Hi, haven't posted in awhile, life is busy with a 3 and 4 year old Anyone out there ever had cortisone injections? I had me first one today in my shoulder and was so relieved by the lidocaine before hand I forgot to ask what reasonable expectations should be regarding stiffness/pain/ etc. Must have gotten ahead of myself in excitement as the pain vanished with the anesthetic but now feeling quite a bit of pain again in the joint. Is this normal, does it take a couple of days to reach full effect, how frequently are other people going or is it only as needed? Thanks in advance, Ali
Guest guest
Hi Ali - I've had the cortisone injection in my right shoulder before. It will hurt for a couple of days. The trick is to keep moving it as much as you can tolerate. Use a heating pad for the pain, too. It will get better and hopefully you'll get relief. It didn't work for me because I had bone spurs on the humeral head and a benign bone cyst further down the humerus. Had to have two surgeries to correct each problem. They thought the cyst might have been cancer at first. Thank God it wasn't. Anyway, best of luck to you. I pray the shot works for you and you get relief very soon. Keep us posted. You know we all care..... Doreen Hi, haven't posted in awhile, life is busy with a 3 and 4 year old Anyone out there ever had cortisone injections? Guest guest
I have had them in my hip and knees, fingers, wrist. Due to have one soon for shoulder. They hurt but not as bad as the relief from some of the pain in other joints. It usually for me takes about 2 days before I feel relief with rest of course. But I fail to take time and rest and will get to doing things and a week later will feel miserable from pain. My RA doctor tells me to let my body rest and I forget that when the pain slows down a bit. Irish
Guest guest
I was really against cortisone injections for awhile, but the difference it has made in my life over the last month has changed my thinking, and i find myself starting to worry what life will be like when it wears off, and how soon is too soon to have another. For those of you who have had injections, how long have they lasted for you?  I just gave myself a humira injection this morning, and am also on arava and voltaren....so far so good i guess. I was given my cortisone shots on Dec. 15. The first day and a half, I was rather forced to stay on the couch, but it has been worth it since then. Now, wondering how much time I have to feel somewhat normal..... Guest guest
I had one near the end of September, for a trip we went on and it lasted me right through to the New Year. I still have fewer swollen joints than in September. I also am on Humira and Voltaren, but I take methorexate too. Arava made me lose weight and feel crummy. Guest guest
Hi : I have had great success with cortisone shots. They can last 3-5 months, or if the shot did not work well, you can get another one a week later. I hope you feel better soon, and I wish you many pain free days ahead.  Hugs,  Barbara From: (musiclvr) <musiclvr3237@...> Subject: RE: [ ] CORTISONE INJECTIONS Date: Friday, January 22, 2010, 11:43 AM  I was really against cortisone injections for awhile, but the difference it has made in my life over the last month has changed my thinking, and i find myself starting to worry what life will be like when it wears off, and how soon is too soon to have another. For those of you who have had injections, how long have they lasted for you?  I just gave myself a humira injection this morning, and am also on arava and voltaren.... so far so good i guess. I was given my cortisone shots on Dec. 15. The first day and a half, I was rather forced to stay on the couch, but it has been worth it since then. Now, wondering how much time I have to feel somewhat normal.....
