Like my sister-in-law, your grandmother may be having trouble swallowing--so

you might try pudding, and minced things stirred into mashed potatoes. Or

she might be having trouble managing her spoon, if she's still feeding

herself and has tremors. For a while there Marti was very concerned about

spilling things on herself. Or she might be having trouble keeping on

track. We have to remind my sister-in-law to keep on eating.

We had three months when Marti wasn't eating at all. She went from 110 to

94 pounds and the doctors were urging us to put in a feeding port, which we

were resisting. Putting her on Aricept and Seroquel seemed to increase her

appetite or vastly improved her swallowing, we're not sure which, and she's

back up to over 100 pounds, and has an excellent appetite.

I think a journal is an excellent idea. It's so hard to remember details

when it's time to give the doctor a report. I email Marti's husband in

Germany a weekly report and save all the emails in a folder, so I have the

equivalent of a journal stored in my computer.

All of you take care out there,

Ann

Hello, Everyone ...

Several questions about keeping journals -- a super idea!

As a matter of fact, I gave a copy of the journal I had been keeping about

my Dad for a period of about a year to the geriatrician before he was

admitted for assessment in August. She found it to be of great help in

providing some accurate historic background on the onset of symptoms and

rapid changes in his behavior.

We should all be keeping such diaries -- I found it helped my " peace of

mind " to be writing things down -- and who knows, maybe our records will be

of use to some researcher somewhere, sometime.

Anne,

That was kinda what I was thinking along w/ helping my grandma. I

wonder if at some point in time that those entries would help someone

else. At least I know that they won't hurt anything.

She seems to be a bit worse today. She is outta balance and her

eating is slow. She was diagnosed w/ emphysema today also, but the

bright side of that is, that it isn't really bad and they think that

they can control it w/ an inhaler. So that is good. I'm also

thankful that she can respond well today and yesterday too. So her

mind is pretty sharp. I think that an important thing for me to

remember that is in all of this chaos is always something to be

thankful for. I may have to look for a while for it but it is always

there.

Thank you everyone for listening. :)
