Guest guest
I get ours at walgreens. Any pharmacy should have it, it is behind the counter so you do have to ask the pharmist for it, it is not on the shelves, but is OTC. I get 2 big bottles for $15. Guest guest
I know alot about sorbitol,as my son uses it. It does work very very very well. Sorbitol is a fruit sugar. it is actualy found in all fruits. Just like if you eat too much fruit, if you injest too much sorbitol, one of the lovely side effects is dierreha. Sorbitol is a hard to digest sugar, so it sits in the colon and acts as a " hyper- osmotic " agent, that draws water into the intestines causing loose stools. It is naturaly sweet and very sticky, it can be mixed in juice just fine (just put a small amount of juice to make sure your little one drinks it all) Sorbitol is used as a food additive in many things. Check you medicine cabinet, or food pantry, i can bet it is an ingrediant in something you have on hand or love in your house. It is also used in all diabetic candies/cookies, etc that are on the market today. That is becuas sorbitol does not raise the blood sugar, it does not trigger a response of an over production of insulin, so is great for diabetics (and also alevates the worry that giving your kid a sugar to help with consitpation issues may results in problems down teh road) It also dose not cause dental cavities either, it is NOT like cane sugar. From the studies i've read, Sorbitol has not shown any significant weight gain issues, and is considered safe for dieters to use. Sorbitol is OTC, but it is kept behind the pharmacy counter, so you must ask for it, it is not on the shelves. And don't be suprised if your pharmacy has to order it each time you call it in, so be prepared ot call a few days to a week prior to needing it refilled. For kids 25lbs and up, you want to start with 1 tablespoon daily, play with the dosage until you get " soft serve ice cream " consistancy poop. for older kids it may take a full 2 tablespoons or more, due to their higher body weight to get the same desired results. Give too much and you willknow it. You will be cleaning up poop from your kid and your floor! (had many incidents of giving too much, and having to bathe the baby, and clean the house lOL) But i tell you, you need to clean them out, and hold back, it will do the job in spades! Sorbitol, like Lacotuse is a natural sugar, so you don't have to worry about advers reactions, (unless your child is allergic to either that is) or any problems if any is absorbed from the intestines (which is why i choose this treatment) Side effects that will go away in clude gassiness, bloating, slight irritation around the anal opening. THese all go away and shouldnt be bothersome to your little one. Of all these, my son only had a little redness aroudn the anal opening that whent away with a little Boudroux's butt paste, and after 1 month on the sorbitol he didn't get again, unless he had multiple poops, which resulted in multiple wipings, and lets face it, if you poop 3 times a day, and wipe that often, your bum will bother you a bit too, right? I have to say that sorbitol, does what it claims! It is completely safe, and natural. I love it, and am soo happy i had a great GI who is soo opened ot the natural side of helping my son's GI problems > > Huh! Well, I was just being facetious...you know how you can't trust everything you hear or read on the news, but 's question prompted me to check it out. According to http://www.medicinenet.com/sorbitol-oral/article.htm this really does cause diarreha! This article says it's " medicine " so you could probably get a rx. > Another article tested rats...they found the soribitol lead to weight gain, which led to hormone problems (with estrogen) (which is a whole other yahoo group!). But is good for osteoporosis: http://herkules.oulu.fi/isbn951425158X/html/x770.html > > > So- - there ya go! > sorbitol > > > Hi! > > While getting ready for work this morning, I heard a news story that chewing gum with sorbitol in it causes diarreha (did I spell that right?). It causes the gut to absorb water and which causes " very loose stools. " > > Throw out the Miralax, ladies!!
